I can't stand the silly words to some very fine music.

But not all who love classical music are toffs.

I have watched the last night some times and see many national flags being flown some for EU countries. Its a rare time to be proud of your country ( what ever it is) warts and all without being ashamed or embarrassed as thats not now a woke thing to do. a fleeting moment

Sad, really. We have a collapsing economy, massive job losses, serious Brexit concerns, the closing of the foreign aid department and a virus, but Johnson and Rees-Mogg worry most about a silly song.

As the national broadcaster the BBC should be concerned with all those things and it has its own future funding worries. It's amazing it saw this as a good time to not sing the lyrics to songs at a long-established event and essentially to lie about the reason; we all know there was no Covid issue about singing that couldn't be easily addressed.

Apparently sign ups to 'Defund the BBC' and cancellations of TV licences went up massively during the whole debacle, the BBC did itself no favours.

Are you sure they are worried? From a spin perspective, it's the ideal non-issue to distract all their increasingly disenchanted natural supporters from the mess being made of everything else.

so now Darwin & other notables are for the chop in the Narural History museum?

Now Charles Darwin gets cancelled: Natural History museum will review 'offensive' exhibitions about the Father of Evolution because HMS Beagle's Galapagos voyage was 'colonialist'

Natural History museum warns its Charles Darwin exhibits 'may be offensive' in the wake of Black Lives Matter protests

Museum execs ordered review into museum’s links to slavery and colonialism

Collections under review include items collected by Darwin on HMS Beagle

Darwin's work isn't going to disappear from the Natural History Museum.

Reviewing our understanding of what he thought is a great idea and the conclusions from that should be included in the presentations.

And his work on biology was used directly by others to determine social policy, and often to justify racial discrimination.

But obviously it's a source of OUTRAGE for people who want to be OUTRAGED.

Well done. The best way to respond to a Daily Mail article is always to unthinkingly project the prejudices therein. Preferably add your own ludicrously hyperbolic interpretation too.

Whatever you do, always avoid going being the headlines and considering the issue at hand in context.

Some background.

It's a funny thing but it seems that those who got so worked up about singing Rule Britannia don't seem to worry about that other British thing: the rule of law.

That showed great restraint in not including today's version of the second half of the first line...

what are you referring to? the international "law" thing. There is no such thing just opt-in agreements and treaties. To compare those arrangments as "law" doesnt compare to national law where if you opt out the cops come and arrest you and the courts put you in prison. The Northern Ireland protocol should have been negotiated in tandem with any trade deal as they are intimately connected - but the EU wouldnt agree (to its advantage, we were bing screwed), no trade deal means the northern ireland protocol is null and void in any sane person's mind. How do we maintain the G.F.A? offer to do the inter Ireland trade with electronics ( which the EU rejected)

Treaties are one of the components of international law. Ministers of the Crown are bound to observe them.

Or were.

its the other way round. it would be more accurate to refer to international "law" as rules created by opt in treaties. we can opt out. As for our reputation being damaged - not in the minds of sovereign states that want to protect their sovereignty

It's an interesting view of sanity, but it wasn't a condition of the Withdrawal Agreement, or mentioned in the Conservative Party's election manifesto, or included in the European Union (Withdrawal Agreement) Act 2020, or put forward in the negotiations with the EU.
