Gravel under 3000€

Post by Lubos9H »

Hello cyclist, i am new to the cycling world. I really enjoy riding but i dont understand terminology and componets that well. I have seen some videos but i am still in the dark. I want a gravel bike for traveling to work or going on holidays or for little european expeditions (couple of hundreds km). So please help me to choose my buget is preferably under 2700 € not £ but I can go higher up to 3000.
Here are mine options feel free to add yours and debate. If any link is in slovak i apologize i hope the specs will be in a technical form/way.

The information is in a language most of us can not read, sorry
Try searching these fora and others, you might find some more info
Apparently there are fora for almost all interests, try to find one in your language
Try visiting the cycle shops and asking for test rides
€3000 seems a bit much to pay for a cycle, to me

Many of us would advise a new cyclist to spend much less to start with, one can get a decent cycle for well under €1000, one imagines cycles might be a bit cheaper in Slovakia
Entertainer, juvenile, curmudgeon, PoB, 30120
Cycling-of course, but it is far better on a Gillott

These expensive bikes are designed to be ridden by experienced cyclists and need regular maintenance by expert cycle mechanics.
For the average cyclist, the gears are likely to be too high, and the handlebars too low.
As a general rule, for practical transport (to work) I would avoid hydraulic brakes and cables which run inside the frame tubes; I would want mudguards and a way of carrying luggage.
This one https://www.canyon.com/cs-sk/gravel-bikes/all-road/grail/grail-cf-sl-8/2717.html?dwvar_2717_pv_rahmenfarbe=BU%2FBK with the strange handlebars I would avoid on principle....its done just to be different, not to solve a problem.

I see maybe i should start at lower mid stuff. I dont want to use it just as a ride to work I want to put serious km on it. For example i want to travel to the Baltic sea. I am skinny fit (179cm 67kg) guy who wants a great adventure. I dont know are those bicycles too high tech? Because im thinking to invest more and save later.

Might a decent touring bike be better for you?

Here are a few examples https://www.spacycles.co.uk/m1b0s225p0/Bikes/Touring

If you plan on carrying luggage whilst putting in your serious km then unless you plan to use framebags my answer would be 'none of the above' because they don't have mounting points for a rear rack.

i like those the geometry on more advanced models looks like on the gravels. But its made of steel whats the weight of it e.g. : https://www.spacycles.co.uk/m1b0s225p40 ... -STI-10spd
i would like to keep it under 9-10kg if possible.

Can you fix a hydraulic disc brake by the side of the road? Or a gear cable routed through the frame? Or a combined brake and gear lever? I can't, and for that reason I wouldn't use such complicated stuff for touring in England. Maybe there are more experienced cycle mechanics in Slovakia or Poland; I don't think there were in the parts of Slovenia, Hungary or Croatia which I have visited.

Very nice. I only ask because the bike I was thinking of is not currently shipped outside the UK

Slightly over the weight you specified but otherwise very close to what you are looking for. Spa would put on the gearing you want, so long as it is something they stock.
