Towns and Villages in Wiltshire

Post by crossy »

I don’t really have time to tour so I set myself up a challenge in Wiltshire to cycle to all the town and villages only one per ride. I got an atlas of Wiltshire and wrote down all the town and villages there are 968 altogether. At each place I prop my bike up on the sign and take a photo some of the villages are so small they don’t have a sign. If they don’t I take a photo of the village notice board or road sign of the main road. If no one has any objections I’d like to list them here. Each time I do one I’ll edit this post it will only be the name as the photos would take up too much space. If people don’t like this (mods just remove it).

You started doing them in alphabetical order? Then changed your mind?

I wonder if you'd be better off creating a Flickr album.

Sounds like a good idea. Doesn't have to be Flickr of course, other online photo storage is available. But it's essentially a photographic project.

I’m using my iPhone to take the photos so they go into the iPhone album but backing them up on google photos. I’ve typed the list of villages from the back of the atlas, a in one paragraph, B in another and so on all they way through the alphabet. Each time I go to a place I Mark it off on the list in highlighter.
I do the ones closer to me then the farther away ones at weekend. Yesterday I set off to do a longer one but my legs didn’t feel good so cut it short halfway so got a closer one.
No I didn’t start doing it with the alphabet it just happened that way.

These days, most files created in Apple's environment can be saved to Apple's own cloud storage - any reason you're choosing to make the images on an Apple device and save them instead, in Google's cloud storage offering?

Why only one per ride? I would have thought that any practical number could be a accomplished in a ride.
You'll never know if you don't try it.

If I change from an Apple phone to android using google photos I won’t loose the photos. One location per ride will make the challenge last longer.

A great challenge. I live in Wiltshire and have cycled to many of those, but it’s taken me a good few years!

Very good, how many years do you expect the project to take?

I wonder if anyone disapproves?

I was thinking it would take me between 6 to 10 years. I’m nearly sixty now so I was thinking of doing the longer ones now and leaving the shorter one for when I get older.

If I was doing it, I think I might be tempted to camp in a central spot and pick off several, either on a single day, or else 'star' rides... there's a whole bundle within striking distance of the camp-site in Wilcot, for instance.
