10 Speed Cassette on 11 Speed Wheelset

Post by johnweightsen »

Hi,

Just a quick question.

I'm using a 10 speed cassette on an 11 speed freehub body with the little spacer behind the largest sprocket as is the norm.

I've gotten a spare wheel for my turbo trainer which has an 8, 9 & 10 speed compatible freehub body.

If I put an identical 10 speed cassette on my new wheel (obviously now without the little spacer) will I have to adjust my limit screws or will the cassette sit in the same position between the dropouts?

Cheers

the manufacturers of trainers and/or wheelsets would like you to believe that the cassette will align exactly as it does on your usual wheels. However IME this is extremely unlikely to happen; after all it doesn't between wheelsets from different manufacturers, or sometimes even different wheelsets from the same manufacturer.

So I would expect some fiddling around with spacers (behind the cassette or on the training wheel's axle depending on the nature of the discrepancy) to be required before the trainer will work without gear adjustments vs your wheels.

NB a 10s cassette usually needs a 1.78mm spacer to fit to an 11s 'road' freehub body. However some 10s cassettes include a thin spacer (1.0mm normally) without which they won't fit properly to anything. If you find a 1.0mm spacer is standard with your cassette (you can check this for a shimano cassette by looking at the EV techdoc for your cassette) then it should be fitted when you fit the cassette to an 8/9/10s body.

cheers
