Halogen lamps

Post by gar »

Could I somehow put those halogen rechargeable lights on a helmet? They have got a really long beam haven't they?
My crank shaft is also my handle bar so I can't put lights on the rotating part.

Also what do recumbent riders use for rear mirrors as the seated positon (and handalling at the same time) does not allow sufficient butt movement to get full rear view when it is necessary.

If I try to get full rear view by looking/turning then my steering is BOUND to go wonky which is not good.

erm lighting regulations state a white beam to front and red to the rear, if you stick a lamp on your helmet then everytime you look behind you'll be committing an offence.....

Not true. For a light to be legal it must be attached to the bike, therefore any light NOT attached to the bike is not an illegal light. However, if the light you attach to your helmet is your only light, then you are riding illegally as the light isn't attached to the machine.
Got it?

Can't I just avoid looking round?!

I have ordered a head strap front light from SJS as I am now back to bikes only (wheelchairs only)as my car blew up on Monday and I don't want to miss any parties in the party season!

I just love riding in the cold! It is so stimulating!
Winter's night? Nothing better!

I am also ordering a single pedal crank shaft like that bloke TJ said!

Ha Ha Ha!!

Where did you order it from gar, and is it the same as the one used by Hugh Culverhouse?

paul.j.butterworthATbtinternet.com
was the name given to me by SJS as the man in the know, so I have written to him.

You can get rechargeable systems designed specifically to fit on a helmet, with the heavy batter mounted elsewhere. I think many are quite expensive though. I think nightrider did one which used to be on gearshift. I think lumicycle do some too (adverts in Cycle or could try www.lumicycle.co.uk
I think these are aimed generally at night time mountain bikers.
Can you fit a small LED light (say smart polaris) to the front of your trike some way for legality?
I expect you'll have thought of this but the bright rechargeable halogen sets can blind drivers if you point it straight at them and it may blind you if you try to look in your mirror!
Good luck :-)

Yes I have JIUSR got space for a regular
led flasher, but now thanks to 36hr delivery by
SJs I have got a "Petzl" light which straps round the head.

I'll give it a design report in a while.

The beam reduces the more you twist the plastic;

It twists right off if you go on twisting, which may not help on a dark night

Excellent - another night rider though I don't get much done myself at5 the moment.)
Enjoy the stars (a great thing about cycling at night is that you can ened up on unlit roads with no light pollution- can be really beautiful.)

I've always been keen on nightriding but not
in the rain in the winter at night..... in the summer in the moonshine at night!

Need must tonight... I'm off to the Bee Breeders dinner on my hand cranked in the dark..... in the wet... Only 7 miles there.
