with some models you can shorten the cable pull by repositioning the cable, the other side of the pinch bolt.
If you add a sleeve to the part of the cable which goes around the gear lever, so that it is thickened slightly, that will make a small difference too.

Post script - I decided to go the J Tech route at the back - a no 6 alters things so the shift lever travel to bottom gear is reasonable.
