German retailer Rose Bikes will no longer sell bikes to the UK market due to changes in internal assembly processes that mean it is not feasible to set bikes up with the front brake on the right, as required by law in the UK.

Not quite. That notice says no bikes. The current notice is all goods.

More jobs for UK,excellent. All the nation needs to do is to develop a manufacturing centre making components.

Indeed, I foresee a golden age of cycle manufacture in Coventry, useful simple robust practical machines with proper lights and not too many gears (I am thinking of the r-word, an expensive hub made in Germany!)

Invest your money first.
If you have doubts, explain how you can compete on scale and cost with global competition.
Hint, they will be cheaper by far even with tariffs.

Rose Bikes are presumably bothered by the confusion around how they will be dealing with UK orders, but if they choose to not deal with the UK market in the long term, that will be their choice. They will not be compelled to stop trading outside the EU, they will have actively chosen that option.
But if this creates more business for UK suppliers such as Spa, great. I have always knowingly and willingly paid a little more to support UK businesses and don't regret Rose choosing to give up.

Hmm. I see bike-discount.de have quietly removed the United Kingdom as a valid delivery destination.
They've also removed Ireland (republic of), which suggests their understanding of Brexit, the EU and modern geopolitics is sketchy to say the least.

Or, more likely, that their current supply to Ireland was over the so-called UK land bridge and has also been naffed up by our government's dithering and delay.
I suspect they will be quicker to restore supply to Ireland via France than to the UK. At least the requirements to supply to Ireland are well-known, whereas the precise details for the UK are still uncertain, with less than 11 days to go. Boris's failure to secure "the easiest trade deal in history" is being compounded by his ongoing failure to admit failure.

There are several ferry lines direct from the mainland to Eire, no need to go through rUK

It is the uncertainty that is the problem. They do not know what arrangements will be necessary for UK orders that happen next month. A pause in doing business with UK customers is very understandable.

Nobody knows what arrangements are necessary for orders being sent across the UK-EU border even now because so many freight vehicles are delayed and out of position (even before the 48 hour UK-France border closure), senders can't be sure whether non-perishables shipped even 10 days ago will cross the border in 2020 or 2021. It's a complete shambles.
Rose Bikes are far from the only business rejecting orders across the UK-EU border. In the other direction, Hornby were in the news as now refusing to sell to EU clients due to this mess.

Hornby have stopped all international orders until Jan, not just EU. Too much uncertainty and risk of postal disruption etc.
NickWi wrote:Isn't all of this an argument for (preferably) supporting your LBS or at least a UK online retailer?
No, it's mostly an argument for reduced consumer choice. Remember, this cuts both ways, there are (were) plenty of smaller uk retailers who'd found a niche selling stuff to the rest of the EU. It just cuts deeper for uk exporters since they're a market 5 times larger, and it cuts smaller businesses worse as they're the ones who can't easily just move part of their operation into the EU.
People mostly ordered from places like rose to get odd bits and bobs not stocked elsewhere, or take advantage of the odd good deal. The postage wasn't the cheapest so I doubt many were ordering regularly.

What, like these sorts of jobs?

Dear Customer,
due to the Brexit and the withdrawal from the EU domestic market without an Free Trade Agreement from the 01.01.2021, we can no longer fullfill any orders from the UK. Already ordered goods, that can be shiped until 20.12.2020 will be send out. Orders that can not be shipped until this date will be cancelled.
If your goods can not be shipped, our customer support will contact you via E-Mail. Unfortunately we feel compelled to not fulfill UK orders currently, we hopte to be able to ship to our UK customers soon again. Thank you very much for understanding and for your loyalty and support.
But fortunately my recent order has just been dispatched so hopefully I get my stuff before all trade temporarily ceases with the EU.
I got the same e-mail today which is disappointing as they were great for dynamo wheels, lights, etc, and thank god my B and M IQ-X dynamo light was delivered today at an outstandingly cheap price.
