We're actually heading backwards towards an EEC like agreement with the EU, without the ability to influence standards.

And that not being the same thing was a major part of the argument for some who wanted the UK to Leave.

But that question came from Ulster... and three of the counties are part of the Customs Union and Single Market... and so are the other six (sort of, for goods)! "The best of both worlds" as the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster recently put it.

Happy Christmas

Or Ireland according to a question on https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_ ... e_internal but no reply from them yet. Bit rubbish for anyone in UK or IE who got a gift voucher from an unsuspecting friend this xmas.

I'm still awaiting an order from Rose. Ordered on 16/12, reported as being with the carriers (UPS) on 18/12, and due for delivery on 23/12. Package didn't arrive on due date, but the tracker now tells me it was at Stanford-le-Hope (depot?) on 24/12, and is heading my way.

Looks as if I just got in before the cut-off, particularly fortunate as I used my 'Birthday gift' from Rose as part of the deal.

Even when things have settled down, it may not be economic to buy from Germany with tariffs etc, devalued pound. This is bad news for anyone buying bike stuff. Importers won't have to compete with grey imports, so your LBS will probably be paying more. Wiggle, having bought out their biggest competitor in CRC, will now have even less competition, so they can charge more. Anyone who imagines we are going to be manufacturing more cycling stuff is delusional.

I notice that the Rose Bikes information page about deliveries to the UK suspended contains the phrase ‘we hope to be able to ship to our UK customers soon again.’

I think the suspension of deliveries/acceptance of orders is due to the timing of the Brexit ‘agreement’. Perhaps no one is available in the holiday season to consider the terms and adjust the website/shopping cart to include the UK as a non EU overseas location?
Bike 24 similarly offers non EU postage - interestingly including to Norway - for 19.99€ instead of the 5.99€ for mainland Europe.
I think deliveries will resume but at a much increased cost and the likelihood of delays/goods lost in transit.

Maybe also depends on the paperwork and formalities necessary (not just about import tariffs).

I have purchased from Rose before as well as others and probably chose Rose & others based on stock availability and price. I'll avoid companies that give lousy service (e.g. Evans Cycles) but otherwise stock and price. And if paperwork and exchange rates make Rose more expensive then (for me) no reason to use them.

Suffice to say..... If it's worth their while selling to UK customers, they'll do it. :D

What is the position with VAT in the 'deal'. Does tariff free include VAT or will that be subject to normal rules?

As long as it isn't charge by the supplier (shipper), then it will be near enough a nil cost balance. If not deducted by supplier, then it's an additional 20%.

    The current guidance on GOV.UK:
    https://www.gov.uk/guidance/get-your-eu-business-ready-from-1-january-2021
    https://www.gov.uk/government/collections/customs-vat-and-excise-uk-transition-legislation-from-1-january-2021
although the page dates make that slightly uncertain.

The IfG explainer before the new Agreement
    https://www.instituteforgovernment.org.uk/explainers/tax-brexit

But I haven't yet seen an analysis from anyone that I trust.

Another aspect might become how the Distance Selling Regulations might (or might not) apply. If I remember correctly (which may not be the case), UK Distance Selling Regulations are the UK's implementation of the EU European Consumer Rights Directive. But now UK has its sovereignty back, UK cannot force EU to obey its sovereign laws (unless there is some agreement in place) ...

Bikester have the same warning now, but the option to pay to make UK legal.

'Tresting. How much do they charge for rh-front set up? On flat bars, it's only a five-minute job at home. Even with drops, the hardest part is probably rewinding the bar tape. Might be a pain for them to do, but not worth paying for, it's so easy to do at home.

re Last.... perhaps Rose et al are concerned that most new machines are hydro brakes these days, and that is no 5 min job.. and even more on drop bar bikes especially those now hidden cabled as I don't think the hoses would do length wise.. WILL
