From a customer perspective, at the moment there is a high proportion of online sales so, I would expect the manufacturers to tighten-up on thier QC processes to ensure the bike is correct before sending out, knowing that the machine is likley to be box-shifted. A small change in a changing marketplace, that makes a big difference.

I came upon a rather telling arrangement a little while ago. A customer had bought a very expensive electric-assist Cannondale MTB. He had paid for the bike in a local, well established bike shop (that, incidentally, employs mechanics) but it was sent to him boxed directly from the importers. There was an assembly-related problem that couldn’t be fixed and when he contacted the retailer they washed their hands and said he had to contact the importer for a replacement bike. This thing cost several thousand pounds and the retailer had no interest in even looking at the bike.

There was an issue with the front brake, which was a manufacturing fault, and the brake blocks were also misaligned. The shop replaced the faulty part no problem but should there be an expectation of a predelivery inspection which should have picked up these faults? Indeed, is the seller obliged in law?

The seller sorted your problem out, you weren’t expecting a PDI - what’s the question?
