Hi,

Like a jet washed car engine, that then hides a multitude of sins, Slightly different situation though I admit.

I, on the other hand always buy/acquire used Electrolux Twin Turbos:

Each of those must be more than 30 years old. One I bought "reconditioned", one was my mother's, and the other I bought for £1.09 on ebay. You know, just to add to the collection.

Sad...........you got no pets then :P

I love the general opinion of how Ebay is full of stolen bicycles!
If there are indeed (and there are bound to be the odd one or three) stolen bicycles on Ebay then they most likely will be filthy, not maintained cheap bicycles. The 'odd one or three' will be very noticeable due to the very expensive appearance of said bicycle, BUT, the very cheap selling price

I certainly feel that Ebay is too often slagged off and spoken about by people who do not actually sell or even buy on the Ebay platform.
Nicknames such as 'fleabay' are certainly out of date.
I was an early user of Ebay (1996) and have had the occasional hiccup but certainly in the thousands of transactions over those years in between then and now both buying and selling, have only on a couple of occasions seen anything which I termed as dodgy!
Too many non informed bigots on all Forums (not just this one)!
By the way, if I were a thief I would know what I was stealing. It would certainly not end up on Ebay`````plus, if it did, it would not be dirty in any way.
Finally there are thousands of really nice and genuine people selling and buying on Ebay. I know, I have and am one of them!! -:)))

I agree.

Also, some sellers might well take the attitude "I've finished with this item, haven't got time / can't be bothered to fettle it, but rather than take it to the tip I will put it on ebay to see if it is any use to anyone else. At least it will save me a trip to the tip."

What general opinion? No one has said it's full of stolen bikes, that would be as daft as saying there were none. If someone has a stolen item to sell, then having places to do it without face to face contact is an advantage. A number of stolen items get sold on ebay, that's a simple fact, I don't know what the percentage is, I expect it's very small, but that it will still amount to a lot of items.

No pets, these are my babies.

Actually, I was just mirroring the comment about repeated buying of a certain well known brand of vacuum cleaners. I just happened to end up with three by an unusual set of circumstances. I bought the third one for spares, as it cost me nothing and I had to drive 100 yards out of my way on the way to work to pick it up.

All a bit off topic, sorry for diverting this critical discussion.

simonineaston wrote:Another angle on the 'dirty bike on ebay'... in the week, I came across an abandoned Dyson vacuum cleaner, left in the lobby, with a sign 'needs tlc - help yourself', so I did. Here's the puzzle: Dysons cost hundreds of pounds and are coveted. The coveter, having bought one, fails to carry out basic, simple maintenance. Then when it stops working, they dispose of it, often without attempting a repair. Strange enough, but it gets odder...The coveter then repeats the exercise - there's a chap at work I was talking to about Dyson, who cheerfully admitted to having bought 5 of them serially, commenting that "they're really good" - not if you need to keep buying a new one to replace the last one, they're not!! Unless your name's James Dyson of course, in which case stiffing the punters for 5 over the years, at several hundred pounds a pop makes really sound sense! Genius.

Sebo is the way to go. Their domestic model came out at around the same time as the first Dysons. There have been dozen iterations of design since then witha seemingly constant need to change the design. The first Sebo was called the X1. They're now on the X1.1 . Our Sebo is many years old and has run faultlessly with the only maintenance work needed being to replace worn out motor brushes.

I'm waiting for my Vax121 to bite the dust (see what I did there) so that I can replace it with a Henry.
