Chain Oiler
Re: Chain Oiler
Looks neat! Though I’m sure some will say its unnecessary.
Re: Chain Oiler
Neat and better than nothing if you’re on tour. I would have taken one on our LeJog back in 2001.

Re: Chain Oiler
Video looked a bit over the top.
Centre from a reel of fishing line and a bit of cloth wound round?

Claud Butler used to build chain oilers into the seat tube.

Re: Chain Oiler
nice idea but I can see a couple of problems
1) the chain will be dirty, and the gizmo will get dirty accordingly. Thereafter, you will be smearing a mixture or dirt and oil onto the chain, rather than just oil
2) the utility of it rests in good part on the container being oil-tight. I wonder how reliable this oil-tightness actually is?
cheers

Re: Chain Oiler
I would of thought the process of wiping dirty black oil from the chain after oiling was an important process in removing dirt - the new oil flushes out some of the dirty stuff inside the chain.
Re: Chain Oiler
If that was my patio i probably wouldn't want to drop chain lube on it either.
Re: Chain Oiler
Just buy a Parktool Cyclone thingy.
Cleans your chain easily.
Wipe it dry, and then re-lube.
Lube it on the bottom run of the chain with a cloth underneath.
You can do a chain like that in minutes without mess.
Buy 5ltr of Screwfix degreaser, mix it 50/50 and it's brilliant.

Just googled it, I was pleased the Amazon listing confirmed I was viewing the Unisex version.
I have to admit I have been intrigued by these, if they actually do a decent job in a quick and easy time.. or if they are just something which is not really needed.. might be tempted to try.
50% degreaser, What’s the other 50%?
Re: Chain Oiler
Wait, what?! Y'all clean and oil your chains every time you ride? You mean you don't have one of these?

Sorry, I was being a bit quick and brief, as the dog woke up and wanted us to go out!Jupestar wrote:Mick F wrote:Just buy a Parktool Cyclone thingy.

There's a thread on here about it all.
In a nutshell, I bought the Parktool Cyclone from Evans a couple of years ago.
Tried white spirit in it, but it left the whole thing greasy and smelly and dirty.
Bought some Screwfix Degreaser and mixed it 50/50 with water into a small bottle, then used that instead.
Meanwhile, I bought some soda crystals to clean out the Cyclone of the grease and muck of the residue of the white spirit.
With a nice clean Cyclone and 50/50 degreaser, the chain is sparkling clean in a couple of minutes. The Cyclone can be washed in the kitchen sink and is equally sparkling clean.
Dry off the chain with a rag, or leave it overnight, and re-lube with your favourite lube.
HIGHLY recommended method of a no-fuss chain cleaning job. All done including cleaning up, in five minutes.
The brushes and rollers all come out easily. After washing mine, I spread the bits out on a tray and put them somewhere warm to dry.
Here's the thread.

Click and collect from Plymouth.
I'll be in town on Thursday to pick it up.
Looks excellent value. Water soluble and biodegradable too.
Utterly and completely impressed by this.![]()

I mean it. Utterly and completely impressed.
White sprit is good in the Cyclone, and Gunk is brilliant in a jar to shake.
This Screwfix stuff in in another league entirely.
Not tried the jar method, but I'm unlikely to ever bother again.
The chain is so clean, it's as if I'd used Gunk in a jar. It's so clean, I decided to do Moulton's again. That bike had the Cyclone treatment with White Spirit, but using the Screwfix, it got it even cleaner ........... and better still, both the chains now have a sparkle. White Spirit leaves them dull.
That's it for me.
The only times I'll take the chains off, is to measure them.
From now on, it's the Cyclone + Screwfix no-nonsense Degreaser. Water washable and clean.
Pointless using anything else. £9 for 5ltrs and I've not even used a cupful and I doubt I'll have to clean the Cyclone other than washing it out with water.
