Would a reputable frame builder consider adding disc tabs to a skinny 531 All Terrain frame and forks? Would in particular the forks have enough rigidity?

My thought also. Thanks for reinforcement.

FWIW you can nearly always add a reasonable disc mount at the back, often including a brace between the chainstay and the seat stay. Most of the likely problems are at the front.

Also my thinking! Hence the "particular" reference to the forks.
I was just vaguely hoping my conclusions wrong!

Wouldn't it be easier to fit specific disc brake forks?

...if Brucey's supplied re-inforcements then if you braze them between the chain stay and seat stay then you may be ok to fit a rear disc brake :-) if it helps saint john street cycles now offers a bike with a front rim brake and a rear disc brake- they reckon it works okay. I guess it makes sense if habitually slow down using the rear brake, but stop using the front..

The pun was intentional! If I have to put up with cantis at the front then might as well at the back, got to have some regard to aesthetics! And the "whole" is too pretty to swap the forks.

if you want a low maintenance brake to put into that frame, you could consider SA drum brakes. At the front you can have a 70mm or 90mm brake. On that bike I'd use a 70mm front. At the rear you can have X-RD (for screw-on freewheel) or X-RDC (for 8/9/some 10s) cassette.

Drums may be worth considering, but it's ability to stop not maintenance at issue. And I very much like my xtr hubs!

unless they have disc mounts on them you shouldn't be thinking about other brakes, should you...?

BTW a 90mm brake would definitely be 'too much brake' for that frame. A 70mm front brake, if set up/bedded in correctly, is likely to give you more than enough stopping power for normal use.

cheers

Have you lost your mind? Kool Stop Salmon’s would sort that out. Btw that’s a nice frame (builder?), Reynolds, 1inch, XTR, 26”, sweet. Is that a steerer extension?

The current xtrs don't, but if I went disc could get suitable hubs of nearly equal quality. And drums surely a weight penalty which is the last thing I need as I enter what will almost certainly be my last year pre-electric.

Nothing sorts out cantis in my view. Builder apparently Simon Davey, a one-off custom job I believe. No extension - long unthreaded steerer. The build quality is fantastic - as much attention to detail and finish inside the bottom bracket shell as most builders manage externally.
2nd most comfortable bike I have ridden.

I’m surprised those XTR v’s aren’t performing. These Ultegra BR-CX70’s with Kool Stop Salmon’s will stop a goods train https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Shimano-Ulte ... 890.l49292 if you miss I have a couple of spare sets.
