That's grim. Any prospect of further recovery?
Have we got time for another cuppa?

sad to say but I don't think I will ever walk, talk normally or ride a bike ever again; pretty banjaxed really.

Thanks for all your support anyway; much appreciated.
One of my neighbours, guess she’s about 300 yds or so away, moved into her bungalow about fours or so ago. Following an earlier stroke she’s electric wheelchair bound and knew nobody in our community - she had to move to where there was a suitable home for her and the covid pandemic made things additionally difficult. To make matters worse she had an undiscovered heart condition and, following an emergency operation, escaped death by minutes. About a year ago I got chatting to her and her new partner; he’s a decent sort and seemingly able bodied, they meet in hospital, she’s no model but has a nice personality, they now live together and plan to marry. Her life isn’t enviable, but it has certainly improved a lot in recent years; time can bring positive changes and sometimes the next to impossible happens.

Life can be pretty naff. It’s easy to say but can be painful - it is and has been to me - to put into practise; a very experienced person said to me that you can’t control all the things that happen to you in life but you can control how you react to them. That’s maybe glib, but it’s not meant to be so.

Everyone on this forum wishes you well and we all thank you for the help that you’ve given us over the years. We wish you well and just maybe things will edge forwards for you.

That’s true, but at times it’s also dammed hard to remember.
Don’t fret, it’s OK to: ride a simple old bike; ride slowly, walk, rest and admire the view; ride off-road; ride in your raincoat; ride by yourself; ride in the dark; and ride one hundred yards or one hundred miles. Your bike and your choices to suit you.

Really sorry to hear that Brucey, but at the same time I trust that a person of your obvious intelligence and resourcefulness will make the best of things.

It surprised me (given we have never met) how shocked and saddened I was when you abruptly disappeared from the forum and when we then discovered what had happened, and I was properly delighted when you started posting again!

Anyhoo, as hinted to by the previous 41 pages, we missed you and if you ever need real life assistance for anything at all, I think I can speak for many here in saying that you just have to ask.

Cheers!

Sorry to hear about the limit of your recovery . Hopefully advising us numpties can at least provide some satisfaction. Am very grateful for all your past advice.

(Now have a FW running on my Brompton, cribbing mainly from various of your previous posts.....and if I can't sleep....I just go through in my mind what's happening inside an AW when you change gears. Usually works)

All the best..and hopefully more that you expect.

Brucey, as so many have said before it is great to see you posting again. I truly hope you continue to recover. Take heart that many people continue to improve for many years after a serious stroke. Technological advances have also hugely improved the quality of affected people’s lives in recent years. Like so many have said before, I was deeply saddened to hear of the terrible events that befell you before you were admitted to Addenbrooke’s hospital.

I don’t often post but have been a member of the forum for >15 years and have benefitted so many times from your encyclopaedic knowledge in the technical section. I thought my interest in Sturmey Archer hubs was rather eccentric until I found fellow ‘like-minds’ in the ‘technical section’! For many years I have continued to ride a 1950s Raleigh frame with a SA-AW hub gear, double rear 3/32 sprockets, and a triple Stronglight chainset. Great for riding around town (with the SA-AW), climbing hills with the smallest Stronglight chainring) and touring with a wide range of usable ratios across the 18 gears. I have serviced and repaired this simple, robust set up so many times and the technical detail in your posts has provided me with the necessary insight to solve my SA problems. Long may it now continue! Welcome back and take care.

Just returned here are seen that Brucey is posting again! What great news. Brucey if you read this you gave me loads of tips and advice on wheel building and internal geared hubs, which I'd rashly dived into exploring!

All best wishes with your continued recovery!
