Chainring and chains

Post by Pebble »

need a new 130mm BCD 39t chain ring for my 7 speed double. the only ones I can find are for 9 speed triples. They certainly look tike they would fit but how would my 7 speed chain get on with something designed for 9 speed (thinner chain)

They should work fine together- check that the chain is not too worn out first- this is quite likely if the chainrings are worn out...

I'm replacing the whole drive train - the one currently running is at about 1.5% i doubt it has another month in it, the chain ring is the only bit I don't have in stock.

I just wondered if the cainring would be a bit narrower as I think 9&10speed chains are tninner ?

The difference is so small it is normally not an issue. I have done it often...

The problem is more likely in the other direction, when a chain too thin for a cog or ring climbs onto the teeth.

I've managed OK with a 9 spd chain on a 6 spd block so I think it will be fine.

It could be fine, it could jam. 1-8 speed chains work with everything up to 8 speed rings, so I don’t think you’ll have any issues to be fair.
