Frame has only one d/t braze on for gears

Post by Domestique »

Hi
I am putting together a bike for my sister, and really she wants a tripple chainset at the front.
The frame we have is quite old and only has one down tube braze on. What are the options in this scenario?
Thanks in advance

The chances are the frame was made to only have rear gears.
You might find you need something like this .
You will probably have to cut the origanal one of and put the band over the top of the mark
They also sell these . That would save cutting the old one of.
Out of interest why not fit the combined brake gear lever.
Hope this helps.

The person I am building the bike for wants flatish bars, she doesnt want drops. I am going to use an mtb 7 speed set up. I will still need the extra d/t boss to do this though, or have I missed something?

If so it will take some work to fit a modern hub of 130-135mm.

It is indeed a 126mm spaced frame. I couldnt convince my sister about the joy of fixed riding, so I will be following Sheldons frame re-spacing method.

You will probably need to change the guide under the bottom bracket for the second cable.
You could try running the outer cable for the front deraileur all the way to the seat post clamp and using a cantilever brake cable stop bolted here. Some thing like this.

Strange thing is the guide under the bb is a double one :?

Just looking at those gear leavers from SJSC do you think it might be possible to take off the levers and use the boss's for the d/t cable stops like these SJS Cycles

You can get combined 21 speedbrake and gear levers for mountain bikes too! They do tend to be designed to work with cantilevers or more likely Vbrakes though - I'm not sure how things would work out if usd with calliper brakes.
You can also get 21 speed twistgrips.
Have a look at ebay

Strange :?: looks like the band on stops are the best bet.
If you do not want to cut the old one of, mount the new one lower. You only need these or something similar.
Sorry I did not realise you were going to use straight bars.
Try LBS and see if they can order some for you.

Think I will cut the boss off and replace it with one of the double d/t cable things from sjsc. Looks like the easiest solution.

Just thought of this.
It is important to get the right type of brake levers.
V brake levers pull more cable than Cantilevers. If the bike has road type brake fitted to the fork and frame. V levers will cause them to grab.
I apoligise if you already knew this, but thought it better to be safe.

I will be using a set od Shimano BL-R440's which seem to work well with double pivot brakes.
