As upthread... if you could tell us a bit more on what you need this to do I think that you might get some helpful suggestions.
What do you do on the Mac while you're out on a trip?
Thanks
Jonathan
PS: That's downloading.

Thanks.
And needs to use local data storage rather than web-based.
And needs to run on an M2 Mac.
And not Strava, Rubitracks, GPXSee or Golden Cheetah.
From suggestions in this thread that leaves Komoot and Relive.
What else is out there?

I downloaded myTracks4mac yesterday - trial version.
It seems fine, though not nearly as a good as Ascent.
I have myTracks on my iPhone, and it's free.
https://www.mytracks4mac.info/en
Giving it some thought, but I may pay the £17.99 for it.

As a GPS viewer on my Mac I used Kartasto. Free veesion and a Pro purchase (free does a fair amount).

What are its deficits compared to Ascent?

Ascent is dead, if not, very poorly due to time moving on and operating systems are now incompatible with it.
Ascent is brilliant. It does exactly what I want from an activity app. Presentation, analysis, and everything. Trouble is, it's dead.
I can still use it and access my recorded rides on my old MacBookAir ............ trackpad is kaput so I use a USB mouse ............ and I can see them on my elderly iMac which has already "broken" and has needed professional repair.
My old MacBookAir isn't long for this world, and neither is my elderly iMac.
When they go, so do all my rides records from 2004 onwards.
I need to export them all into GPX files, and then input them all into another program. Big job, but can be done in slow time so long as I can still access Ascent.
It's not the end of the world if I lose all this. You can't take it with you into the after-life!
However, I like to keep stuff and re-live the old days when I was doing 4,000miles plus a year. I don't want to lose it all.
Elevation profiles and stats, distances, average speeds, etc etc etc.
myTracks4mac seems to fit the bill. Not perfect, but it'll do.
Still playing with the trial version for now.

Ascent will not work with Ventura - I've tried, but the software refuses to even load and has a big "No Entry" sign across it. My old MacBookAir is still ok, and the old iMac is still ok too, so I'm not worried about losing all my rides from 2004 onwards in Ascent. I can (with laborious monotony) export each and every outing as a GPX file, so I won't lose anything.

How is the data on those rides that is used by Ascent stored?
Are the rides already stored as GPX files somewhere?
I'm not asking how Ascent works or what it does, just about the historic data.

The rides are stored within the app.
........... having to open the old MacBookAir ............ and they can be exported thus.

It is very unlikely that they are stored within the app when it isn't running.
I expect that they are macOS files that are available to Ascent.
If you can find where they are and the format used to store the data you might be able to access them from the new program without going through Ascent.
I suggest searching in the Finder by name, date and suffix of
gpx.

.tlp format.
By the time I've downloaded a converter and done each and every one of the rides, I may as well as transfer them into my newly purchased myTracks program.
Already done 2004 and 2005 ........... going to do 2006 next.
Simple and straightforward.

Remember that in all probability myTracks4mac will "die" at some point. Whilst I dislike subscription software it does encourage the developer to maintain and enhance software as to ignore it and they'd lose their ongoing subscription income. Whereas buy once and after a time you'll have plenty of users who purchased some time back but few new purchases so income trivial to zero but the software still requires work to maintain encouraging developer to ignore or discontinue it. Particularly the case for the hobbyist developers (one person in their spare time).
So one aspect to consider is how easy it would be to move on from myTracks4mac to something else.

Goodness knows!
I have rides records going back to October 2004.
I have exported one by one, each and every ride from then to mid 2009 so far. Exported in GPX format and then dragged and dropped them into MyTracks. Maybe I shouldn't have deleted the GPX files after transference?
I could have kept them all for perpetuity ready to go into whatever program.
I could start again, rather than carrying as I was doing on to 2023.
Tedious job.

My tedious task is still in it's process.
One MacBook with the Ascent app on is used to export each and every GPX track from October 2004 (when I first started recording my rides) to May 2013 so far. I have bought a 64Gb memory stick to put it all on including the MyTracks app.
I have annual folders of the GPX tracks on the same stick.
Slow progress. I did May 2013 this morning, and I may do June later.
I bought this one from Argos.

Excellent bit of kit. Double ended with USB and USB-C. Lightning fast too.
Meanwhile, Ascent is fine and dandy on my old MacBookAir as well as our elderly iMac, so I use both in tandem.
Even got my Chopper JOGLE on it!
