It's the last thing i think of before going to sleep, its the first thing i think of when waking. I'm constantly looking in mags, reading books, checking out the latest gear and getting out whenever i can. What am i talking about? ....cycling? This has been going on for years, i thought it would have waned over time but no, its getting worse! Am i normal? is there a cure?

Ooops... I think I may have this virus as well! Sure its a virus, never had it before.....

I keep on thinking how I can get to places on the bike and not the car... tomorrow I have to get an ironing board into work... I cannot find a way to get it there on the bike at the moment....

Every waking moment.... minute... bike bike bike... or how to sort out a journey so I can take the bike!

ISnt it a NICE virus to have though?

Oh dear.. Beaky boy and a few others sound like chronic bike nerds. Signs include spending too much time on the CTC forum, answering many questions in painful detail, scanning online bike shops for the latest widget,
reading through piles of old yellowing CTC and Cycling Weekly mags, watching old recordings of The Tour de France from the 1980's, scanning ebay for interesting bikes and apparel although you've no intention of buying anything and grief from partners and family members.."oh no not bikes again"
Please don't despair..A bike nerd support group is being set up complete with helpline.

Cast your mind back to Last of the Summer Wine ....

Young Barry is complaining to his Father-in-Law, Wesley Pegden. (He's the chap in the garage fixing old cars)

Wesley said to Barry, (in a Yorkshire accent) "Get yourself an obsession!"

An "obsession" is what I've got. It keeps me sane, it keeps me happy, and it keeps me happy and content. It keeps me tired and it keeps me entertained and it keeps me easy to live with.

I am obsessed.

Oh dear I think I'm infected too. Couldn't cycle to work today as I had to wear suit and heels. I have been so despondent all day - even though I know that had I cycled I'd have got a proper good soaking in the rain.

Yep obsessed too

Platforms? On your bike? Even I, who cycles in a skirt, would draw the line at platforms

Cycling is central to nearly everything that matters - climate change, commuting, fitness, lifespan, diet, ecology, the weather, well-being of future generations, petrol prices, food, tax, manners, doing unto others, emotional well being, meeting people etc.

When I started this reply I was going to say that I think about cycling stuff all the time too and we're all obsessed, but I've persuaded myself that it's perfectly reasonable.

Great isnt it!!

Of course we're obsessed. If we weren't we wouldn't be here!

When I got my decent bike a couple of years ago my wife reckoned I was like the kid who got a new bike for Xmas. Well I still am after over 4500 miles and lots of bits/tools etc. Even buying a new chain is exciting (now how sad is that!). Also doing a new repair job is deeply satisfying.

Also bikes are great to share with your kids. My weekend almost always involves cycing with my daughter to the swimming pool and with my young sons in a bike trailer to the park and to the railway station.

It is no coincidence that Radio 4s greatest ever invention was the bicycle.

My wife started to tell our family/friends that I spent all my time reading and looking at porn.....suitable pause for horror before adding 'Bike Porn, you know, Cycling Weekley, Wiggle, Probike Kit, stuff like that....'

I'm still not sure everyone believes her about the 'bike' bit.....

I keep catching my husband up late in the small hours surfing the net...and not looking at porn...

He just looks embarrassed and tries to hide the Extracycle or the Pedersen bicycle site from view and mutters something about "important research".. yeah right...

I thinks that just wierd...

:)
