Route Planning for Garmin
Is there an easier way to create a planned route for a Garmin which doesn't use the Garmin Connect app?
I have just tried and it is fiddly to create a route with.

Re: Route Planning for Garmin
I create mine in Komoot (other options are available), export them to gpx files, then import into Garmin Connect.

What sort of computer do you want to do the work on?

Re: Route Planning for Garmin
I ended-up getting my Garmin on no notice half way through a 2 month tour in Belgium and didn't have the electricity or time to spend experimenting setting up online accounts and working out how to get routes created online to the Garmin. So for the rest of that tour I used the on-Garmin route creation. It was not fast and the selecting destination was a fiddle (depart was easy as it was "here"). Routes were OK in that they were cycle friendly but not as good as those created by https://cycle.travel - but then I was not on any timescale and not aiming to get anywhere other than to a suitable campsite a day ride away.
Next tour each day I created routes on cycle.travel, imported them to Garmin Connect web site and they downloaded and appeared on device immediately, no hassle at all, very easy. I was creating routes in cycle.travel and importing to Garmin Connect using a tablet (web browser). My Garmin GPS was already/always bluetooth connected to my Smartphone which seemed to be talking to Garmin servers, detecting route, etc. downloading it all automatically. I believe the transfer cycle.travel to Garmin connect has changed to become slicker and more automatic since my last tour so should be easier.

Re: Route Planning for Garmin
Preferably all on Android, but could use old windows laptop.
Re: Route Planning for Garmin
I just linked my Komoot account to Garmin so all my Komoot routes get synced over to Garmin.

Re: Route Planning for Garmin
Is it no longer possible just to copy a gpx file from somewhere on computer to garmin, either by cable or somehow wirelessly? I'm out of date with garmins but when I used one I never used the connect app.
Re: Route Planning for Garmin
The free one - on the route choose "Export to GPS Device" and save the file.

Always, I use BikeHike UK
Not as good as it once was, but that is my go-to route planer bar none.

Download your route in whatever format works for you, and upload to your device.
One of my Garmins wants FIT files.
All you need to do is convert them into FIT via a program ............ I like GPS Babel

On my Macs I mount the Garmin device as a volume and drag or copy the files into the privileged folder from where they're automatically imported.

Yep.
I do too, but my Garmin devices want different formats.
Montana wants GPX tracks (not routes).
Prior to that, I had an Edge 705 and prior to that an Edge 305, and they wanted TCX.
I now have an Edge 20 (similar to the 25) and that wants FIT.
Yes, drag and drop.

I think that site will take some getting used to. I put in a start and end, and it routed me on the motorway. So I unticked the 'Follow Road' checkbox ... and the route is still on the motorway. I think I need to work out how to use it!Mick F wrote: ↑24 May 2021, 2:47pm Always, I use BikeHike UK

Re: Route Planning for Garmin
I struggle with IT and other tech stuff. But, I use RideWithGPS to plot my routes and then download them into my Garmin Edge Explore without too many complications. RWGPS is simple to use, but they have a terrific help system that has on many occassions come to my rescue with simple to understand instructions. Can't recommend them enough. There is a choice of 'membership' plans. The basic is free and then a couple of higher levels which have a fee.

Re: Route Planning for Garmin
Almost anything you can create a route on will talk to your Garmin. I've used Komoot, Strava, Cycletravel, RidewithGPS - possibly more I've forgotten about. All work well - which I use depends on what mapping I want to use, whether I want the process to be in any way automated, where I'm riding and what sort of ride it is. I don't ever recall using Garmin's own method.
One link to your website is enough. G
