It looks like in wet weather discs have a higher skid risk, if applied to full extent.
Is there a turning moment with the disc being to one side?

One starting point in research could be to see if riders using disc brakes slide in one direction than the other direction, assuming some sort of turning force occurs and has some effect. It may have no effect but watching the crashes on TV may give some data.

Can you rule out camber, straightness of road, an early fall being to one side causing some degree of steering around that, a tendency when free-wheeling to have one pedal weighted at 6 o'clock , etc etc.
You need to account for so many variables that you have very little tight data on.

Today’s farce reminded me of an Audax where everyone has the route but follow the man in front going off route. Must have been chaos turning all those team cars around.

Many years ago there was a aerobatics team crash which took out the entire team - basically the lead pilot flew into the ground but all the rest of the pilots were only watching the formation leader. That's what you do in formation flying.

Just followed him into the ground.

Same in road races. The break follows the lead moto or car which is at about 80-100m in front. They're racing, they follow the lead bike. It's not like a Sportive where you can just stop at a junction and check. Certainly at the back of the group, those riders can't see a thing, you're literally just following wheels.

As for the whole disc brake argument, it was newly resurfaced road so there's still tar and solvents leaching to the surface and it had rained onto that.

The whole lot was an ice rink, it was nothing to do with brakes. The wheels lost traction and slid out before brakes could even be applied.

I don't get why anyone has to be guessing reasons they do it or has particular problems with it...

I have a friend who is an experienced guy, asphalt, road tarmac, sma, runways, motorways, big patch repairs ,also does for the forces, we have a few miles of SMA about 15 miles away up on a main link road to Belfast, its used by a local cycle club and they have been complaining since the surface went down,its SMA, very tight dense smooth surface and it starts with a tight oddly shaped roundabout where quite a few TT men have slid out when doing the local 10 and where many BMW Drivers have learned about opposite lock or not if they entered the ditch..that man was watching that crash on his phone, he shouted on me to witness it , I said 130plus tyre pressures and he said SMA newly done..Will

The tech stuff doesn't really matter but it's a form of extra durable and very smooth tarmac - however it has a high bitumen content to bind it all together and until that binder is removed from the surface by tyre wear, skid resistance is relatively poor. Which is more or less what I said a couple of days ago...

When it rains onto that newly laid surface, the water combines with the bitumen and solvents within it which have leached to the surface and you basically get a skid pan.

Towing a caravan, more than 30 years ago, I encountered a skid on a similar surface in wet conditions.

Some speed restrictions on SMA for a week after laying may be worthwhile, or slippy went wet signs.

Families generally not encouraged throughout the race so they usually turn up on the last couple of days and get to spend time with dad/ mum who isn’t around much due to training camps etc and to have the experience of the race, Geraint Thomas talked about it a bit in one of his recent podcasts.
