Does anybody know what the cycle storage is like at Manchester Piccadilly train station? How much is there? How safe is it?
Thanks.

It's not great: just a few (uncovered) sheffield stands outside the main entrance (on the Station Approach side, not Fairfield Street). On the positive side, there are some railings nearby for when the stands are full (as they tend to be after about 8.30 am), and the Transport Police park their cars and vans right by the bike racks, which perhaps makes them relatively secure (I've never had a bike stolen from there, anyway...).

There is a problem with bike security in Manchester it's one of the worst places in the UK.
I've been lobbying the council for a number of years for secure lock-ups and despite promises they have failed to appear.
There are a number of stations outside of the city centre that do have BLUC lock ups why they don't install them in the city centre is beyond me.
Having said that there are a number CCTV cameras at the station that should cover the 'sheffield' bike stands at the front of the station.

That area is one of the worst for thefts, students are actively targetted.

There's loads of bikes left at Piccadilly every day and around the city centre esp by the town hall so theft can't be that bad. I even saw an unloacked bike left outside the Arndale on Friday and it was still there an hour later. The racks at the station are by the entrance to the police / outside seating seating for starbucks / bus stop and within view of the main pedestrian entrance.

Manchester has one of the highest cycle theft rates in the country, if you have a half decent bike it will be stolen, most of the bikes you see are £99 halford specials or stolen ones , no-one from the many cycle forums that I contribute to will leave their bike in Manchester city centre at any cost.

Investment in a good locks and making sure removable bits like wheels are secured somehow is the key...Failing that theres alawys insurance..In Amsterdam everyone seems to have a cable lock the size of a ship anchor chain.Just do your best and if it goes it goes ..

I leave mine there to go shopping. Never had a problem. Cheap bike though but I don't think the low lifes have any idea about cost of bikes. Especially if it sports drop bars. They don't know how to use them.
