Advice - value of a Jeff Jones complete bike

Post by Dynamite_funk »

Hi everyone.

Sadly I’ve come to the conclusion that I need to move on my JJ.

I am simply not using it for its intended purpose. Mainly due to a mix of new parenting and getting into road cycling and touring again.

I would really appreciate any advice on its value as I am completely clueless on this.

Thank you very much in advance.

Details as far as I can figure out...

Jeff Jones diamond steel frame with truss fork
DEORE XT hollowtech 2 chainset
DEORE XT front derailleur
Race face seat post and stem
Rohloff 14 speed hub (have original box and bleed kit) - has been serviced annually
Halo rims
Hope dual pot Tech evo hydraulic brakes
SAN Marco ASPide saddle
Schwable big apple tyres
Eccentric BB shell
Chris King Headset

In very good condition. A few scratches, no dents no dings. Hub works smoothly and is a great ride :D

Odd ball so limited market but perfect for the few. 50% of what the new price would be maybe depending on age of parts. Eg current mechs worth more than previous versions.

I suggest you post your query on www.singletrackworld.com. There are some owners of Jeff Jones bikes on there, and possibly a couple who have a Jones with a Rohloff. They will be better able to advise you on the potential sale value, and you would probably also find more potential buyers on that forum of such a niche bike.

I think the number of potential buyers of a Jones with a Rohloff is likely to be very small, simply because the overlap of people who like Jeff Jones bikes and people who like Rohloffs is relatively small. You might be lucky and have one or two people willing to pay a price that reflects the quality of your bike and the price of the build, as opposed to people wanting a bargain and only being willing to pay a low price.

If not, and if you only get very low offers, it might be worth selling the Rohloff separately from the bike. A Rohloff wheel on its own will have a much larger potential market. Similarly a Jones bike without a Rohloff will also appeal to more potential buyers. If you did not want to incur the cost of converting it to a 10 or 11 speed derailleur transmission simply to sell the bike, you could instead convert it to a singlespeed (something which is more common among Jeff Jones owners than using a Rohloff).

In your shoes, unless I absolutely needed the money, I would not sell it for a low price. If you regretted selling it, you would not be able to replace it readily later: current Jones frames use thru axles rather than the Rohloff friendly 135mm rear spacing. The frames are now also much more difficult to get hold of in the UK, because there is no distributor, and the prices are much higher than a few years ago, partly due to a worse exchange rate.

Hi there Slowster. Yes I thought splitting may be a good idea.

The bike can’t have more than a 2000 miles on it. I’ve basically used it for commuting for a bit after buying from
A guy who was having to get rid of a lot of impulse purchases (more money than sense!)

Have tried to register for the single track forum but can’t post a topic or a reply. Very frustrating.

Any idea on value of the rohloff set up (wheels included) and separately the JJ frame plus all other kit?

Btw, the lowest gear on it because of the double chainset is ridiculous, you could probably get up a vertical wall!

I have no idea of the value. Persevere with posting on Singletrackworld because there are a number of Jones bike owners on there who would be better able to advise, and because that is the biggest pool of potential buyers for such a bike.

It might also be worth similarly posting on the forum on www.bearbonesbikepacking.co.uk. The membership is relatively very small compared to STW, but there are a few Jones owners on there and people who are into bikepacking are much more likely to appreciate a Jones/Rohloff than most MTBers.

I was looking last year and gave up and bought new. On eBay the hubs in a wheel fetch somewhere between £500 - £700 depending on the model, yours has the advantage of external shifting and disc brake, but for anyone putting it in a frame that didn't need the tensioner it would need some minor alteration.
26" wheels? That might be a disadvantage, it's no longer the most popular size and Rohloff advise not to change the hub between sizes (Though plenty do) I've done so myself and would again, but I'd consider the added risk when valuing it.

They are 29 inch. It's the original steel diamond frame version of Jeff Jones' frames, which was discontinued a few years ago when Jeff Jones introduced the Plus versions of his frames which can take 3" tyres. It was effectively replaced by the short wheel base plus frame*.

* Bothy Bikes are expecting a delivery of these this summer and are selling them for £1,699, but that is with a steel truss fork (the OP's is titanium which would push the price well over £2,000 if the option were available).

What alteration would it need? (I am also puzzled why a tensioner was fitted to the OP's bike, since it has an eccentric bottom bracket.)

I should have written "may" rather than "would" that being the OEM plate to suit the frame.
I'm assuming the tensioner is there for the double chainset.

Wow, that is an amazing bike. I'd say spend a good amount of time finding the best forums/sites/social media groups to advertise it. Bikepacking etc groups. Definitely include in description that it's the titanium version of the truss fork if that's the case (plus size of bike and wheel size). I'm sorry I can't help on price at all (beyond 'a lot') but much like Islabikes I'd say it would hold its value way better than most bikes once you find the right audience. Have you researched new price for the bike specced as closely as possible? I'd persevere with getting your singletrack forum up and running too.

There is a knack to the STW forum. I have been a member for years but didn't post anything for a bit and in the mean time the format changed. At one point your post didn't show up until you opened it in your profile and bumped it yourself. Try replying to some other post first. That will confirm your existance there!

Nice bike! Probably needs splitting to get the most value though. I’d have interest in the frame and some parts for example!
