Cables without nipples

Post by Mick F »

Over the years, I have collected gear and brake cable cut-offs.
Front derailleurs and front brakes, and latterly both front and rear derailleurs as well as rear brakes due to the cable splitters on a separable Moulton.
Various lengths from 2ft to 7ft, and some gear cables and some brake cables. SS as well as galvanised.

Have they any use?
Are they useable for other things?
Should I just chuck 'em out?

These are the latest collection.

I suggest you braid 'em and use the resulting cable to haul eucalyptus logs up a slope :P

I have used these to secure clay plant pots to a wall. The cable forms a figure of eight with one large loop for the pot and a tiny one for the wall screw. The loops are secured at the cross-over by passing through a brass electrical cable connector, ‘chocolate block’.
If I was at home I’d take a photo.

I was hoping for a "bicycle" use.

Can you "re-nipple"?
Clamp-on?

When I was a child my dad soldered nipples onto cables. He used to have a box of assorted nipples.
I think some of them had a tiny grub screw in them to assist gripping.

SJS cable nipples:

The cables can also be used on throttles etc.

Could you make a loop on the end and secure with solder or similar?

Then you could use as lanyards for lights and cameras etc in case they ever bounce off

Or use with a small light padlock as a minimalist cafe lock.

A large crimp would likely be more secure, I think.

This seems a good idea for cable-splitters for separable bikes.

The cables start at the business end - brake lever or gear lever - and are terminated with a grub-screw into one end of the splitter. The other end of the splitter is screwed into it, but has a hole for a nipple to have another cable down to the brake or gear mech.

Not cheap items, these connecter things, and my Moulton TSR has four of them. Rear brake, front and rear mechs, and the SA3sp too.

Bought my fourth cheaper than those, but I can't remember where from.

So ............ at the down-stream end, the unit could very well hold a large crimp. It's not as though it needs to be set in a brake lever unit or an STI or Ergo or a DT shifter etc etc etc. There's plenty room methinks.

Sounds like an experiment! :D

Thinking about it, I did create a nipple with just solder. I was asked to make up a cable for a caburettor, IIRC.

I have always made up my own motorcycle cables and nipples for those are readily available. However I don't know if there is a supplier of suitable nipples for bicycle cables. Like you I keep old cables and cut down rear ones, brake and gear, to reuse as front ones.
