Claris 8sp/Tiagra 9sp compatability

Hi All

I have a winter hack that has been running 8sp Claris ST-R-2000R but the r/h shifter has given up the ghost, looking through my old "bits box" I don't have any more 8sp but I have 9 sp Tiagra St-4400.

Will the 9sp lever work with the 8sp rear mech/cassette? As it's a winter hack I'm not too bothered if it is not slick changing as long as it does the job.

Cheers
Robert

Short answer, No.

While it is true rear the gear mechs can be used for different speed systems the shifter cable pull has to match the cassette spacing.

Fit a 9 speed cassette (may still work with your 8 speed chain) or connect the rear gear cable using the alternate cable routing like this sheldon mod so a 9 speed shifter works with 8 speed. https://www.sheldonbrown.com/drivetrain-mixing.shtml

I've had a look in my bits box and don't have a 9 speed cassette, I'll read a bit more info the Sheldon Brown option.

If I do have to buy a new part(s) I'll look at the various cost options (and availability under current climate) to get it up and working.

A 9 speed cassette should work with a 9 speed shifter and the original rear mech.

I would change the chain though as it's narrower and is good practice to put a new chain on with a new cassette.
