Time for new Look pedals?

Post by GarethF »

I've just noticed some play in my Look Keo Classic pedals. Bike has been on the turbo since last March and lately has been becoming noisy somewhere in the drivetrain. I think it may be coming from the pedals.

Inside there was clean grease, but slight visible wear at the (thin) end of the spindles. There doesn't appear to be any means of adjustment and on reassembly onto the bike the play in each pedal was the same as before.

I haven't ridden it yet, but am not optimistic that I've solved the problem with fresh grease. Next ploy will be to try different pedals. After 12 thousand miles, is it likely the pedal spindles are worn? If so, I guess it's time for new pedals.

have you checked the cleats? I get quite a bit of noise when mine get a bit worn but can't say the play in the pedals themselves produces much noise - mine are @ 30k miles old and tbh, are due for replacement, if I can bring myself to actually buy some replacements!
Convention? what's that then?

Cleats aren't that old, (dis)engagement feels normal. I'm more concerned by the slop on the pedal axles.

Cheers cyclop, I'll see what happens when I swap for a different set. Spares box is buried at the back of the garage!

Looks like the connection with the turbo trainer could have been to blame for the noise. Bike was off the trainer and back on again, and the training tyre deglazed with surgical spirit before my last session on Zwift.

Loose quick release skewers often cause creaking noise which appears to emanate from the bottom bracket, and I think this is a similar. Think I might give the skewers a wipe with an oily rag where they locate in the trainer.

Pedals are still slightly slack on their spindles mind you. Will be keeping an eye on that.

I had play on my Look Keo's more or less from new. Wiggle swapped them with no problem for some Shimanos.
I wouldn't buy Look again. I do have some Exustars which are cheaper Look copies and they have been perfect over 1000's of miles.
