A friend had a nasty off yesterday on her ebike.
Going downhill at a reasonable speed and next thing she knew was on the road with lots of blood. Badly shaken and bruised, but fortunately nothing broken.
She thought she might have hit a bad patch then clipped the kerb. However on looking at her bike, the rear mudguard had large upward kink just behind seatstay. No other visible damage, but I didn't get a chance to examine fully as woman in shock and husband trying to keep things cool.
I'm pretty certain this was some sort of fouling of the rear mudguard, leading to a locked wheel and subsequent skid. The effect probably led to her hitting the kerb and off. No release clips on the rear mudguard.
Seem reasonable? Any other comments welcome as you don't normally hear about this on the rear wheel.

I wasn't aware of the danger until i read it! I have SKS guards which have secu-clips aimed to release the guard stays in the event of a jam/lock. Not sure how effective this is as never yet been in this predicament.

I've had stuff pop the front mudguard clear preventing potential offs a few times whereas before the canny devices came along i did find myself sprawled on the deck after a mudguard 'fender bender'! Whilst i have them fitted on the rear of one bike, never had a release at that end or for that matter a jam (other than mud!)audaxjk wrote: ↑15 Jul 2021, 8:36pm Hi, this was covered recently by cycling uk:

Rare on the back and the wheel will lock up while the front keeps rolling. At the front you’re still going over the bars with no mudguards if the offending item reaches the fork. Eyes open and fully aware while riding remains best policy.
