Re: HS2 and "Leveling-Up"
Levelling up just a Boris soundbite? Surely not
Like those in Wales, anyone living in 'the North' above Manchester won't have been expecting too much from HS2 anyway I suspect.

Re: HS2 and "Leveling-Up"
Unloading WCML and associated bits is one of the major benefits. And there was a special option appraisal rather late in the process which showed this yet again.
But the fiasco at the political level seems to have got in the way of any concept of there being a national and international network or of the need for modal shift.

It's a two year delay on the construction between Birmingham and Manchester.
Which will cause a vast waste of time and money on rescheduling and reprocurement. What would Macbeth have said?

?'If it were done when 'tis done, then 'twere well / It were done quickly':
It's the same the whole world over
It's the poor what gets the blame
It's the rich what gets the pleasure
Isn't it a blooming shame?

Re: HS2 and "Leveling-Up"
It's a vitally needed scheme and the only practical option (in full) to relieving capacity on existing mainlines. Such relief is a hard prerequisite on any substantial improvement to local services and reopening other branch lines.
It's become a CF like most construction projects here because of constant political interference and economic idiocy from the chancellor and treasury who seem to be wilfully short termist and apparently still haven't grasped the saying about stitches in time.
Fortunately labour are still committing to the full scheme, it's just a case of how much damage and delay is done until the current shower are removed.

Have Labour stated where they would find the cash that the current shower can't? Talk is cheap, and talk from politicians especially worthless.

Its just a scheme so that rich people can commute daily to London from longer distances. Total waste of money.

Reuse, recycle, thus do your bit to save the planet.... Get stuff at auctions, Dump, Charity Shops, Facebook Marketplace, Ebay, Car Boots. Choose an Old House, and a Banger ..... And cycle as often as you can......
Re: HS2 and "Leveling-Up"
Cash for any capital spend is borrowed/printed against its future economic returns, the government can borrow/print what it wants within the resource limit of the country, that's been demonstrated several times in the last 15 years. There is a side issue of asset inflationary pressures that governments have failed to grasp (i.e. tax wealth) but I'd far rather they dealt with that than the alternative of living in a failing country, devoid of ambition, with crumbling infrastructure and public services because it's following some asinine rubbish of 'living within its means'.Lance Dopestrong wrote: ↑11 Mar 2023, 1:07pm Have Labour stated where they would find the cash that the current shower can't? Delaying any such project simply increases the total costs and delays the receipt of any returns, it will cost more in the long run not to 'find the cash' and build it as quickly as possible.

Here is a map of the high speed network of Western Europe from Wikipedia
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High-speed_rail_in_Europe
As you will see, our 109km of high speed railway line is well behind Spain, France, Belgium, Germany, Italy and Turkey. At the moment, some people fly between London and Manchester, because it's quicker. If we are serious about reducing CO2 emissions, rather than a bunch of armchair hypocrites, this is what we need to do
And before some clever Richard asks me, I live within 1 mile of the proposed route
