Yes and I expect it's basically down to money, even though the whole 3 weeks of Tour de France coverage reportedly costs less than one day of Euro 2020 and the itv Vuelta show was a far smaller production than the Tour.
I guess Discovery (who own Eurosport) outbid itv somehow but I don't know how. itv maybe didn't value it as highly because it clashes with both the Tour Series and Men's Tour of Britain this year, which they already bought.
Personally I would rather have coverage of the Vuelta than the ToB or Tour series.Doesn't affect me as I have Eurosport but having the option to swap between the two would have been nice.ITV should prioritise the three Grand Tours over other cycling events, possibly Olympics aside, they wouldn't do this with Football/Rugby/Tennis etc would they?

If you are missing Ned & Dave they have an occasional podcast called "Never Strays Far" which will have some coverage of the Vuelta under the title of "Never Strays Fandango"

Yes. itv have long lost or only had some of the rights to other sports, sometimes being outbid by Sky, Discovery or even BBC or Channel 4 or 5 sometimes. They only have part of some international competitions for football now, don't they? Domestic highlights are split over BBC and Quest and I lose track of who shows live games.

Popularity of cycling is a double-edged sword.

Discovery have decided they can get GCN and Eurosport subscribers with it and enough seem willing to pay, so itv loses because they don't feel it's worth outbidding.

Don't think ITV have ever bid, the rights used to be organised by the EBU (which the BBC and ITV are members of).

I think the issue now is that IOC/ASO etc. want to sell Europe-wide rights, so national broadcasters (or associations thereof) can't bid.

And for those of you eagerly awaiting the Vuelta coverage on Quest you will have been delighted to see they replaced the stage 1 highlights with ‘Border Control Poland’ without a word of explanation.

This is up there with the coverage of the Giro earlier this year when for stage 4 they instead just repeated stage 1.

I tried to watch the highlights programme on Eurosport last night, but they were showing a repeat of Strada Bianchi and the Olympic track cycling instead. Had to resort to watching the full programme and fast forwarding to near the end to get the results (I have the Eurosport Player, cast to my Apple TV box).

Blimey that's a relief, when i tuned in to Channel 12 Quest and saw those border control guards pulling drugs and contraband out of that vehicle i thought they were going though the Ineos team bus

ITV and Discovery/Eurosport/GCN have coexisted for the Vuelta in previous years and continue to do so with the Tour. My guess is that it’s ITV not wanting to pay vsquared for the show production, rather than a rights thing. But that’s just a guess.

I think last night's highlights missed the intermediate sprint they spent five minutes discussing before cutting to a break and coming back after it had happened. It's not like there was anything else particularly interesting to show highlights of.

ITV never had the rights, the European Broadcasting Union did. EBU members can then pay part of the fees to show them in their territories.

Looking at the press release - EBU members still have access to La Vuelta leased from Eurosport (which was initially owned by the EBU), but only for a couple more years. ITV aren't in the list paying for it.

IOC are already Europe wide only, ASO are aiming to go that way.

Video quality on Quest is appalling, like YouTube circa 2005.
The commentary was pretty bad (as brilliantly described upthread).

Overall rather disappointing, let's hope the action itself is better.

The Vuelta has always had the worst video quality of the three grand tours but at least Quest HD is available on Freesat.

It is a big step backwards in production quality, though.

Quest HD is on Freeview Channel 114.

Currently watching the Vuelta Live on Eurosport Player on the TV cast from my iPad via Apple TV. The video quality is excellent - HD at 1080/60Hz.

I watched yesterday’s stage highlights on Quest and it was pretty disappointing. Probably 20 minutes of adverts, 25 minutes at most of action, and the 15 minutes of chat at the end.
