Bolts

Post by Joe Sprocket »

Just wondering where everybody gets bottle cage/rack bolts from. I'm looking at replacing loads on lots of bikes so could do with a big bag of different lengths....

Screwfix or Toolstation for bags of 50 or 100 M5 and M6 A2 stainless bolts in the shorter lengths, plus similar bags of nuts/nyloc nuts and washers. As and when I need a longer bolt in a specific length, I buy those online in small quantities.

I occasionally get a bag of these:

to add new life to the assorted random screws jar.

If you know exactly what you want and need lots of them all the same size / length then as above Screwfix etc.

Oh no, I probably meant fixings, or fasteners, or bolts - not screws.

I know it's a bit confusing, but short bolts, threaded all the way are usually called machine screws or just "screws" for short. "Bolts" is reserved for longer, partially threaded machine screws or when referring to "nuts and bolts". Just arbitrary common usage, no big deal.

Halfords sell them.
Amazon,Ebay and most online bike retailers.
I usually go for Stainless or Titanium, same with stem bolts,as I hate to see rusty bolts!

Local fasteners supplier tucked away in some small industrial estate in the nearest town.

I occasionally buy bags of sweepings from SJS, mostly for odd bits used on bikes.

But I buy commonly used fasteners from Kays or Namricks.

I have used these people before https://www.gwr-fasteners.co.uk/

There are also plenty of eBay stores offering suitable size nuts and bolts.

Try Namrickhttps://www.namrick.co.uk/ I've had loads of stuff from them, car and bike, metric/imperial, different sorts of socket heads, bolts, nuts, loking nuts, washers, locking washers etc.. Order a mix of bolts/setscrews/allen screws, a handful of each of each likely size, plus washers, nuts etc to suit.

ebay very good for one-off transactions of this nature - you can almost always search for something quite ambitious (its quite something that it returns the correct item for a search for bottle cage bolt - at least I think so) and have it come up trumps, usually with good prices quoted for single items and with free postage. Not always, mind... This approach can score over buying from specialist fastener retailers, where you will have to know the exact details of the item you require. If you think you might need such things again, note the fastener details - size, thread pitch, etc to build up a library of info. As the screw v bolt semantics are still undecided, I'll stick to the safe ground of fastener... ;-)
