Their involvement in the process probably gives a misleading impression of the degree of professional medical input into the decision, and in their shoes I would be unhappy about the police placing reliance on their response to the polices enquiries.
From the IOPC hearing today:

“The GP wrote [to police] declining to give information because he did not feel he was in a position to be qualified to comment on the personality of a patient to say whether or not they were safe to hold a gun licence.”

BBC reporting today from the inquest of the evidence of the firearms enquiry officer who took the decision to return the shotgun to Davison. Training was effectively 'on the job' mentoring
Mr Rees said there was no training given relating to subjects such as domestic violence or for following a national decision-making model for gun licences.

Previously the manager of the department had told the inquest that the decision should have been referred to her to take because it was a 'high risk' decision. Mr Rees' testimony appears to suggest that he had not been properly trained in correctly identifying when a decision was high risk and had to be referred to the manager.

The inquest has also heard that the force did not have enough people to deal with the number of licence applications it received.

An incredibly courageous officer who acted in the very finest traditions of British policing.

The article was uploaded to the BBC News website yesterday, two days after the inquest jury verdict and damning reports in the media of the Devon & Cornwall police's management of firearms' licensing both generally and in the case of Jake Davison specifically.

The cynicism of the force's senior leadership in asking PC Printer to give that interview at this precise point is sickening. It is transparently obvious that they asked/authorised PC Printer to give that interview in order to generate positive news coverage to counter the critical attention focused on the senior leadership of Devon & Cornwall police as a result of the inquest exposing the appalling systemic failure to responsibly manage the licensing of firearms.

If the senior leadership had done its job with the most basic level of competence in the first place, Jake Davison would not have been able to shoot five people dead, and PC Printer would not have had to bravely risk his own life confronting him.

By coincidence, I've recently been asked to provide a firearms reference for a neighbour I have known pretty much since he was born and he's now 24. I say "recently" but it must be a couple of months since he asked if it was ok to put my name down. Still no police contact so I mentioned that to his dad yesterday. Apparently, around here at least but presumably nationally, the onus now is on the applicant to get whatever is needed from the applicant's doctor.

I presume one result is going to be fewer legally held firearms
