Re: Why are they so ugly?
There you answered your own question right there!
One man's ugly is another's beauty.
I think Moultons are ugly, but that counts for nowt in your mind.
Maybe they're aimed at utility, something your Mercian wasn't designed for at all,of course you could use it as a utility iron but it's wouldn't be a good choice.Maybe they're aimed at the overweight
FWIW,I think the bike in the OP is a great looking machine, but then I'm odd .

Agreed,I test rode one a couple of years ago and thought it was great, double batteries,Rohloff belt drive, front and rear racks.
A great cycling alternative but IMO very pricey for what they offer. To each his own though

Re: Why are they so ugly?
Nice, I'm a Rohloff fan but at the moment my E-bike use doesn't warrant one.
I test rode a R&M Multicharger, though it was the Enviolo hub version, a great machine but I decided in the end it was more than I wanted to spend, maybe one day.
Re: Why are they so ugly?
it was an early retirement present to myself my other bikes not been rode since plus you cant take it with you
Re: Why are they so ugly?

A gentleman in our village treated himself to a Van Moof. It looks a nice bike when seen in the flesh, much better than the pics I've seen on the web. It's a traditional style with built in lighting and an inbuilt tracker if it's nicked.

At the last count:- Peugeot 531 pro, Dawes Discovery Tandem, Dawes Kingpin X3, Raleigh 20 stowaway X2, 1965 Moulton deluxe, Falcon K2 MTB dropped bar tourer, Rudge Bi frame folder, Longstaff trike conversion on a Giant XTC 840
Re: Why are they so ugly?
I think "Ugly" is the wrong word to describe some E-Bikes.
Electric-assist has found big popularity among utility cyclists and necessarily utility demands practicality over elegance.
It's why Ferrari make prettier cars than Volvo.

Re: Why are they so ugly?
Why shame anyone's bikes?
Isn't it enough that they are out cycling instead of driving?
How would you feel if you joined this forum & found a thread where someone posted a picture of your bike with the title, "Why are they so ugly?"

We're really at the dawn of ebikes: on only a few years people will be like: 'what, you haven't got a battery!?' Then fashion and design will come along and mess it all up again!
Re: Why are they so ugly?
Yes and no. I think for transport and utility that's correct, if the purpose it to get somewhere and you can afford one (Which is becoming less of a barrier) there isn't much reason not to choose assistance. Even more so when used for work, assist has pretty much become the norm for cargo bikes and those used for Deliveroo and the like.Slowtwitch wrote: ↑28 Jan 2022, 9:34amWe're really at the dawn of ebikes: on only a few years people will be like: 'what, you haven't got a battery!?' For cycling enthusiasts, those who have the physical ability and choose to use it, there will always be place for non assisted bikes. In the same way as people still go sailing/rowing/canoeing.
What I hope will disappear is the notion that they're two different things, but it's unlikely, people are by nature tribal, looking for the differences rather than recognising the similarities.
I'm glad to say my local CTC group welcomes E-bike riders, for the sort of cycling we do no one cares what you're riding.
