Al
Maybe. But such things are not going to happen sort term and we have supply problems now. Our supply routes were working fine, can you recall any serious issues in the last thirty years? What we need is political solutions to get them working again, that makes far more economical sense than bypassing on ideological principals. I don't have to like the EU to acknowledge it's a big land mass between us and the stuff we want.
What Tilbury expansion are you referring to? If you mean Tilbury 2, opened last year, it's a RORO terminal between the UK and Europe, I don't think there's anything from outside the EU that's going to dock there, neither is it likely to free up any capacity in the main dock. Even that took ten years from planning to opening, and compared to increasing deep water berths, RORO is considerably simpler engineering.

British cheeses have come on massively in the last 20 years, we have more variety than France. The Parisians have now discovered Cheddar and are lapping it up. Our local Somerset Cheddars are superb and Red Leicester have pulled up their socks and strength 5 is now freely available. But then theres Yarg, Barkham Blue and lots of lovely Goats cheeses too. Its like with white sparkling wines produced here we are often showing France how it should be done.

As I observed I couldnt care less if imports of foodstuffs from the protectionists are stopped we have some great stuff here and our pals in Oz and NZ and Chile produce great wines. Personally stopped drinking EU wines years ago. North Africa is a great source of fruit and Veg.

Al
The French well know Cheddar, most of it comes from Southern Ireland. It's popular but although I like it the vast choice of delicious French cheese puts it out of the running.
The trouble with buying nice wine from the pals in OZ and NZ is the distance. It currently costs £12000 for a shipping container, down from the high of £25000.
Listening to an interview with a farmers spokesman on the Truss trade deal, in his view it was a bad deal for the UK. He pointed out that any other country approached for a trade deal will demand the same advantageous terms.
Brexit sold out the fishermen, farmers and the financial sector. Turkey's now coming home to roost but I suppose nutcases like JRM see it as worth it to control our borders!!!!. Meanwhile shortages of staff and a record net immigration are in the media.

For a forty foot? Most wine from outside Europe is shipped in a flexitank inside a twenty foot container, to be bottled in the UK. i don't know what the current costs are, but pre pandemic it worked out at around 12p a litre.
I don't have the figures, but without them I wouldn't assume that wine transported, in bottles by road, from Europe had a lower footprint.

All countries import stuff from all over the world. Sending tanks of wine to be bottled here seems common sense to me. 12p a bottle is a piffling surcharge.

I cant agree about the cheese. I like strong flavours and so much of French cheese I find insipid although I do eat it when I'm there.

Having been to a few African countries and seen agricultural activities there I do feel it right and good to grow trade with them, its better than charity. Its one of the things that we and poorer nations can benefit from now we have left the protectionist EU.

It was all about 'Must get some deal announced at all costs'. Very little in it for the UK, plenty for Australia.
Another case of the Brexit zealots losing track of what's best for the UK.

Several comments upthread about food from Africa and from poor countries and about protectionism.

For a couple of decades the EU has had a policy called "Everything but Arms":
"The EBA scheme removes tariffs and quotas for all imports of goods (except arms and ammunition), coming into the EU from least developed countries (LDCs)."
https://trade.ec.europa.eu/access-to-ma ... g-arms-eba
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Everything_but_Arms

The UK was a party to this until we left the EU. There's a government statement describing the intention to continue with the same policy:
https://fullfact.org/europe/will-uk-rem ... er-brexit/
https://www.gov.uk/government/news/gove ... ost-brexit

And here's yesterday's statement:
"Developing Countries Trading Scheme: government policy response":

All depends which news sources you use. Open your minds...not just the free ones aimed at lefties! The Bath and West indicates a thriving farm sector. Big gas guzzlers all round...!

What does the Bath and West tell us about the Australia–United Kingdom Free Trade Agreement?

Thanks
