Best thing that could happen, takeover by a large supermarket business with buying power and financial stability. Works for Tesco and others. Expect some closures and redundancys though down the line as the new owners get to grips with the business.

Swimming pool chemicals

"A public pool has been forced to close to general swimmers because it has run out of chlorine and other chemicals.
"Saxon Pool in Biggleswade, Bedfordshire, has cancelled almost all swimming sessions to manage its supplies, until it can receive its latest batch on order.
"The problem has been blamed on fires at supply factories, Brexit, Covid and the war in Ukraine."

Fresh food

The season for leaving fruit to rot unpicked is with us again.

"Shoppers could struggle to get their hands on their favourite fruit and vegetables this summer due to a shortage of seasonal crop pickers, industry experts have warned."
"Some areas of the UK are currently missing as much as 75 per cent of their seasonal workforce, raising fears produce will be left to rot in the ground."

Scientific leadership, research and development

"A Cambridge University astrophysicist studying the Milky Way and hoping to play a major part in the European Space Agency’s (Esa) next big project has been forced to hand over his coordinating role on the scheme after the row over Northern Ireland’s Brexit arrangements put science in the firing line."
"Nicholas Walton, a research fellow at the Institute of Astronomy, reluctantly passed his leadership role in the €2.8m pan-European Marie Curie Network research project to a colleague in the Netherlands on Friday."

I would think that leaving locally grown food to rot on the ground is going to feed higher inflation as well as being damaging to our Climate targets - both of which we really don't want to happen. And the reason ... political ideology.

Terrible to see how we had foolishly allowed Britain to become so dependent on the Franco German empire which has been revealed to be a straw house in the face of Russian expansionism.

The various crises have clearly shown that we should be nurturing our farmers and industries to be somewhat more self sufficient.

What do you think that we should be doing to avoid fruit rotting because it is unpicked and pigs being killed and discarded because the food chain can't handle them?

Thanks

Eggs

"Supermarkets will face egg shortages by the end of the year unless they engage constructively on egg prices, the sector has warned.
"The British Free Range Egg Producers Association (BFREPA) said retailers would have to pay more for eggs or producers would either go bust or not restock."

I dont want another 1.5 million poverty stricken Eastern Europeans descending on us and creating the mother of all housing crises and dragging down wages. It bad enough for our youngsters as it is.

The evidence of the effect of foreign workers on pay has been publicly available for some time. It's there for anyone to read. If only there were a useful aphorism about opinions and facts.

But my question was about what we should do now. What does "nurturing our farmers" mean? Public subsidy? Higher food prices? Forced labour camps?

Thanks

The UK received considerably more than it paid in the EU research frameworks. From 2007 to 2013 we paid €5.4 billion and received €8.8 billion. That's a very successful contribution to the economy of the UK.

And that's before consideration of the knock-on benefits from the research and development and innovation.
