I would think that leaving locally grown food to rot on the ground is going to feed higher inflation as well as being damaging to our Climate targets - both of which we really don't want to happen. And the reason ... political ideology.

Terrible to see how we had foolishly allowed Britain to become so dependent on the Franco German empire which has been revealed to be a straw house in the face of Russian expansionism.

I dont want another 1.5 million poverty stricken Eastern Europeans descending on us and creating the mother of all housing crises and dragging down wages. It bad enough for our youngsters as it is.

The evidence of the effect of foreign workers on pay has been publicly available for some time. It's there for anyone to read. If only there were a useful aphorism about opinions and facts.

But my question was about what we should do now. What does "nurturing our farmers" mean? Public subsidy? Higher food prices? Forced labour camps?

I know the Euro academic gravy train has been cancelled...

The UK received considerably more than it paid in the EU research frameworks. From 2007 to 2013 we paid €5.4 billion and received €8.8 billion. That's a very successful contribution to the economy of the UK.

And that's before consideration of the knock-on benefits from the research and development and innovation.
