Cyclist Guide for JOGLE World record attempt

Post by Kate8Bennett »

Hello, I hope you are all well.

Myself and my friend Samantha have been given the green light to try and set a new world record which is for a team of 2 females to complete JOGLE handcuffed together. So we will be running handcuffed with a 20cm chain between us to raise awareness for the charity MIND and that friendship and support can help you overcome the toughest of times. In order for this to be recognised as a world record we need to complete it in less than 15 days. We would start the attempt on the 01/08/2022 and would love to do this within 13 days (allowing some time for error).

I have been directed to this forum as I have been advised many of you lovely people may have cycled the JOGLE. Therefore we are politely asking if anyone would mind being our guide either for sections or for the whole event. We would be taking the shortest route which we appreciate takes us on the busier roads so it has its hazards.

Thank you in advance for any help and response

Welcome to the foum.

Do I understand correctly that you are seeking people who are willing to cycle along with a running JoGLE?

Can you provide any information about other arrangements? Are there any support (motor) vehicles, luggage transfer?

What is your expected running pace?
As I understand it marathon runners who are very fit can run 5 minute miles more or less forever.
That is an average of 12 mph.

If you are aiming for 13 days then you (depending on route) need to plan on about 65-70 miles per day minimum.
That is just under 3 marathons per day for 13 days.

Choice of route is also important.
The shortest routes tend to go over mountains.
Depending on your mountain climbing abilities (running on road) you may wish to consider a flatter route, but that tends to be 1,000+ miles.

I assume that you have worked this out already, so would be interested on your route and timings.
The chosen route will probably impact who can offer an escort along the way.

Do you have accommodation booked?
Are you looking for overnight free board and lodging?
[Noting that I couldn't offer that because I'm nowhere near a JOGLE route.]

Not a bad distance! I packed in at 136km in 22hrs so about 155k in 24hrs.

65m per day is doable but not pleasant on a bad day.

Equivalent to about a 200mile riding day I would say....

Thanks for that comparison James I was wondering how it compared. My neighbour ran two ultras in the same week recently. Won his class and 5th overall it surprised me he didn’t look tired at all.

Done umpteen marathons and they feel like a century tbh. Depending on how you run / cycle them.

Had both where I could hardly walk!

I am also noting that my JOGLE plans were/are based on an average speed of 10 mph so I almost certainly wouldn't be able to keep up.
Apart from the downhill stretches where I doubt many runners would be able to sustain 30 mph.
