Hi, I currently commute and do maybe one ride a week of between 40 and 80 miles. I have some nalini bib shorts and some lusso shorts, both cheap and cheerfull. I've just been in my lbs (ribble) looking at some new shorts for our lejog in september and was impressed whith assos, giordina and addidas but blimey they ain't cheap. As i will need a couple of pairs (wash one wear one) I am wondering if they are worth the money considering they will be worn all day every day. I am just about prepared to pay that sort of money if they are worth it. Or can anyone recomend something nearly as good for a bit less money. I'm 6'2" and 15 and a half stone if that makes any difference and will be riding my shiny new hewitt. (my other lbs).
Cheers, Graham.

Not sure that expense is that much of an issue, though you often get what you pay for.

If you're in the saddle for a few hours, I'd go for bib shorts (saves that elastic cutting in).

Just check the seams and the Chamios. You don't want any ridges that will get uncomfortable between you and your saddle.

Perhaps a forum member who has tried a pair of the shorts you query can help with their opinions, but that's my 5 pence worth (and they say inflation isn't an issue)

True, the Giordana bib shorts aren't cheap but they are superb and have a nice slacker fit than others I've tried and are quite short. I'm normal build and wear the XL size.

Mine are the Giordana Body Clone short (black and grey with red interior) with Elite Gel pads. I wear them all day sometimes, using Assos cream. Lovely! (worth every penny)

The Assos F1 shorts have an stretchy insert which moulds to your body. They're around £110 a pair but worth it for the comfort they provide on longer rides.

Perhaps if you had a pair, you wouldn't have numbnuts :)

i own a couple of decent pairs of bibs and i ralso ecently purchased several pairs of the cheap bib shorts when they had them in Aldi.

They are superb value for money, however they do feel ever so slightly uncomfy around my groin where the padding ends. I do about 15 miles every morning and for that distance its no bother at all. In comparison though, my decent shorts are like wearing padded silk shorts !

I'll stock up on the Aldi ones again but would recommend getting decent ones for a long journey

Mine are Lusso. I have two pairs. Can't fault them.

They are cheap, and I am cheerful!

I've some £5 aldi/lidl (can't remember which) longs - which I've converted to knee length shorts. Comfort-wise they are no worse than my expensive lussos (I think that we shall have to agree to differ on what is "expensive" Mick  ). The difference is that in the aldi/lidl ones I look like i've got a surf board rammed down my shorts (wheter this is a good thing or not I shall leave you to decide) and the shoulder hoops are rather on the long side.

Just as everyone gets on with different saddles I think that different types of shorts suit different bottoms differently.

Guess we all have our personal comfort zones and what is acceptable to wear/spend.

Expensive shorts are expensive cos they use better quality lycra (yes there are different grades) and then there are different ways of cutting the material. Cut properly there is more waste, but they fit better and last longer.

Question is how long do cheap shorts last, as opposed to good quality ones, and do you actually pay out more in the long run.

You could liken it to cheap watery wash up liquid, might be cheap but you use far more to achieve the same effect........

Slightly off topic but...
Cheap or expensive, don't make the mistake of putting lycra shorts or bib tights in the hot wash setting of the washing machine or the hot setting in the tumble dryer. You pay out dear in the short run. :( I ruined a pair of bib tights that I loved that way. :(

Nobody has mentioned Decathlon.

I've got their padded lycra cycling shorts, they're comfy, well made and very economically priced :D
