Cycling Mittens

I'm suffering from Dupuytren's contracture.

It's getting worse, and there's a waiting list for getting it sorted.

The weather is becoming cold ........ even here in the Tamar Valley ........... so riding a bike needs full-fingered gloves.

It takes me some minutes to put gloves on, especially the left one, and it hurts getting the pinkies in. They go, but it's a slow process. I have a couple or three options, and they are all equally hard to put on.

Normal cycling mitts need to be turned inside-out and my fingers can be inserted and the mitts "unfurled" over my hands. Cannot be done with "fingered" gloves, and I have tried!

Question:
Do cycling mittens exist?
Are they tough and strong and will take the punishment of dropped handlebars and be able to allow for aero brake levers and Ergos on one bike and DT shifters on the other bike?

What about Pogies? That’s what rowers use, and I’ve seen mopeds with them. Sure they must also exist for bikes?

Any reason they wouldn’t work?

I would suggest trying them with half-fingered wool gloves or similar to begin with.

^^^^^^^^^^^ I have a pair like those, bought during the very cold winter about 10 years ago. They come in two flavours, one with a side opening/closure for Shimano washing lines and one without for Campag. I bought the ones with side openings even though I use Campag because it is useful to have flexibility in ventilation. I found that even in that cold winter I did not need other gloves, but thin ones are still good to wear because the neoprene of the "mittens" is odd against bare skin. Disadvantage is that you are locked in pretty much one hand position, but that is a small price to pay. The brand I bought is Bar Mitts, and almost twice the price.

I have something similar (Black Diamond) which I got for hill-walking, thinking I would also be able to use them on the bike. But I found it very difficult to change gears. Probably worth checking before you buy.

What gear controls do/did you have?

I have Ergos on Mercian and indexed DT shifters on Moulton.
Both with dropped 'bars.

What about operating a phone?

Touch-screen Garmin will work with any glove finger/thumb, but a phone needs a conductive digit. I have a pair of gloves with such a system ....... which work fine.

You can buy stuff to apply to appropriate areas of gloves etc which makes them work with touchscreens.
