Cover for etrike battery

Post by DGG1941 »

I have been trying to address the issue of keeping my etrike battery warmer in cold weather for some time. Off-the-shelf Neoprene covers won’t work given how the Neodrive battery is located on the ICE. And sewing my own was considered beyond my skill level.

So I decided to use brush-on silicone which is normally used to make molds for reproduction of various items. I one I used is painted on the surface in four coats and took an afternoon to complete given the curing time between applications. https://www.smooth-on.com/products/mold-max-stroke/.
I covered the plug area with tape and used door seal to help form the edges. Didn’t bother with release agent and fortunately it wasn’t needed.

The result is a 3mm thick cover which looks like a badly iced wedding cake. However it goes on and off easily and will undoubtedly give a few extra miles on winter rides. It it is held in place with an elasticated Velcro 2” wide strap around the base of the battery. https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B099RNRT7Z? ... E_DDE_dt_1
It will be painted black at some point.

This was my first experience with silicone and I imagine there will be other uses queuing up soon.
