Thanks for the heads-up.

"Tesco Mobile quietly scraps free EU roaming from 2023 as networks cash in post-Brexit":

"Customers who join us or upgrade on or after the 16th June 2022 will no longer receive Home from Home from 2023. We're currently exploring ways to give customers simple and great value connectivity while travelling, we'll share more details on these plans later this year"

I upgraded my EE Sim only deal to 5G a few weeks ago, and found for an extra £2 per month (I think it's an additional £5 on some deals) I could have EU roaming as an add on 'Smart Benefit' benefit. A bargain compared with £2/day or whatever. The data allowance is massive, more than I use tethering a laptop for hours. First trip.in two years ends next Friday and have already recouped the extra cost.
Think about how long and where you want roaming. £2 per month is £24 per year and on EE contracts (pay monthly) I believe you can enable roaming on either a daily basis (ludicrous cost) or monthly basis (£10 per month). The £10 per month monthly is easy to do as it's enabled by SMS text and disabled again by SMS text (i.e. send enable text when leaving UK ferry port, send disable SMS text on departing EU ferry port on the way home).

Double check what is available for your contract and at what cost and what convenience for your use.

If you spend a lot of time roaming overseas as a block you can hit EE "Fair Use" terms.

"Few weeks ago" might be a bit late to cancel and switch to a cheaper contract.

Lebara's roaming charges sound promising: "we let you use your Lebara SIM in Europe just like how you would use it whilst you are in the UK. This means that you can use the data and minutes included in your allowance in the EU at no extra cost." Any experiences?

Checked with my brother yesterday and the route he used to get roaming whilst in EU on his EE pay-monthly SIM only(i.e. not through EE SmartBenefits) was https://ee.co.uk/help/help-new/offers-a ... broad-pass

I'm told by a recent switcher that UK performance is fine but they'll not test roaming until next month.

Like all budget providers, realise there's no stores or in-person support.

Giffgaff reducing data allowance on roaming. It's down from 20 to 5 gb which is still a useful amount for a traveller with evening hotel WiFi.

Not guaranteed because o2 is only saying they have no plans, same as the others did until they announced plans to charge.

Also, o2's cap appears to be a hard cap, with no option to buy more if you want more. This could leave you disconnected in an emergency.

Not how it works. Tesco mobile are a Virtual Network Operator - they buy a bulk amount of data from a Network Operator with a discount, then sell it on to their clients. Once the data block is used, they buy another one. The issue we're seeing on the market is that the new blocks being bought have the new rules attached. O2 have lost the EU guaranteed maximum roaming price, so will have to pass this increase on to customers, including all the Virtual operators.

According to this
https://www.schengenvisainfo.com/news/e ... ore-years/

the EU are extending roaming for 10 more years.

Phew, lucky we don't have all this bureaucracy anymore.

Yes, it is a disgusting restraint on the amount of money that can be extracted from EU consumers to fund Chinese and Russian (3 and its subsidiaries), Spanish and Dutch (O2) or French (Orange) telcos, oligarchs and/or governments, or to fake meteorite landings (Tele2)

I was not aware of this and would be keen to know more (but Google not a lot of help). Any further info (not disputing, I never heard and an interested as my impression it's not widespread knowledge).

One of my friends is with Lebara and on our recent tour to the Netherlands he seemed to be able to use it with no problems.

Their FAQs:

Do I have to pay for EU roaming?
No. You can use all of your plan allowances in the EU for no extra cost (except the Unlimited data plan which can use upto 30GB). For more details...
