Marble Arch mound
Does anyone from London know?
Recently travelled from Hammersmith Hospital to Oxford Circus on a bus. Surprised to see what appeared to be a grassed over pit heap at Hyde Park corner. Any Londoner know what it is and why it's there?

Ha ha, is this the viewing mound erected for tourists to spend vast sums on to climb out of the pit to the top pinnacle to get a view of Oxford Street so they can plan there shopping route.
Vaguely recall reading about it recently, so my memory of exact details may be a bit limited.

Couldn't they do that if they went to the top of that arch like structure next to it?rjb wrote: ↑12 Oct 2021, 1:36pm Ha ha, is this the viewing mound erected for tourists to spend vast sums on to climb out of the pit to the top pinnacle to get a view of Oxford Street so they can plan there shopping route.

We've something similar in York with the added attraction of a tower on top
Re: Does anyone from London know?
Well, I'm no Londoner, I live near the South Downs, and I can tell you, there are plenty of superb viewpoints up there. And all for free! My fave spot is Wolstonbury Hill but there are plenty of others. Ditchling Beacon for one...

I think you might be beheaded if you tried that...

I'm now completely convinced I live in a country that's been turned into a madhouse!

AFAIK, 'Hyde Park Corner' refers to the SE corner of Hyde Park, opposite the Hilton - a cyclist's nightmare. Marble Arch is at the NE corner but adjacent to it is a locale called Speakers' Corner, where traditionally anyone can get on a soapbox and speak out...pete75 wrote: ↑12 Oct 2021, 8:40pmYeah but it's on the corner of Hyde Park.Philip Benstead wrote: ↑12 Oct 2021, 7:53pm

I can understand how the confusion arises.

Nightmare? It's brilliant! You ride out of the park, under the Wellington arch ignoring all the silly motorists orbiting it, then coast down Constitution Hill.

It reminds me of the Beckton Alps, which I used to pass when I worked in London; that was a spoil heap, or made from one at the former Beckton Gas Works site.
It was serving as an artificial ski slope in the '90's.
The third picture here shows it viewed from the A13 and some views from the top.
