Does anyone from London know?

Post by pete75 »

Recently travelled from Hammersmith Hospital to Oxford Circus on a bus. Surprised to see what appeared to be a grassed over pit heap at Hyde Park corner. Any Londoner know what it is and why it's there?

Ha ha, is this the viewing mound erected for tourists to spend vast sums on to climb out of the pit to the top pinnacle to get a view of Oxford Street so they can plan there shopping route.

Vaguely recall reading about it recently, so my memory of exact details may be a bit limited.
Peugeot 531 pro, Dawes Discovery Tandem, Dawes Kingpin X2, Raleigh 20 stowaway X2, 1965 Moulton deluxe, Falcon K2 MTB dropped bar tourer, Rudge Bi frame folder, Longstaff trike conversion on a Giant XTC 840, Giant Bowery, Apollo transition. :D

Couldn't they do that if they went to the top of that arch like structure next to it?

Well, I'm no Londoner, I live near the South Downs, and I can tell you, there are plenty of superb viewpoints up there. And all for free! My fave spot is Wolstonbury Hill but there are plenty of others. Ditchling Beacon for one...

I think you might be beheaded if you tried that...

I'm now completely convinced I live in a country that's been turned into a madhouse!

Yeah but it's on the corner of Hyde Park.

Yeah but it's on the corner of Hyde Park.
AFAIK, 'Hyde Park Corner' refers to the SE corner of Hyde Park, opposite the Hilton - a cyclist's nightmare. Marble Arch is at the NE corner but adjacent to it is a locale called Speakers' Corner, where traditionally anyone can get on a soapbox and speak out...

I can understand how the confusion arises.

Continuing my ghoulish trend  : Marble Arch also stands close to where Tyburn Tree used to stand, the three-legged gallows. If you search the pavements around there you will find a plaque indicating its exact location.

Nightmare? It's brilliant! You ride out of the park, under the Wellington arch ignoring all the silly motorists orbiting it, then coast down Constitution Hill.

It reminds me of the Beckton Alps, which I used to pass when I worked in London; that was a spoil heap, or made from one at the former Beckton Gas Works site.
It was serving as an artificial ski slope in the '90's.
The third picture here shows it viewed from the A13 and some views from the top.

If all else fails, go into the Tube station and look at the name on the platform. :?
