Bafang BBS01B Mid Drive Kit Throttle

Hi
A friend of mine has bought a Bafang BBS01B mid drive kit and I have said I would install it. I am familiar with working on non electric bikes but have no experience with electrical bikes. The kit came with what I think is a manual throttle like this;

I saw a video suggesting that I should leave this out and I think it might not be legal to use it in the UK.
If I leave out the throttle will the kit work?
Thanks in advance for any advice.
Steve

It should work fine if you leave the throttle out.

The rules on throttles are very confusing: I think a throttle is allowed if it only assists to 4mph (6kph) or if you are pedalling ('ghost' pedalling; turning pedals but with no force applied allowed).

You will get answers from others more knowledgeable than me on https://www.pedelecs.co.uk/forum/forums ... ussion.42/

You can use a throttle as long as it's not a "new build" i.e. factory built, if it's an old bike with a new motor you should get away with it.
The law came in 2016, if you had said machine before that date it comes under granddad rules so you can still use it.
I see no reason why is should not work without the throttle being connected.

The kit would also have to be pre 2016 as well as the bike.

Why, there is no date on a e/motor.
you buy a car say year 2000 and you put in a new engine in today 2022, it does not make that a new car.

That's another part of the regulations that is very confusing; I think there is some contention about age of kit vs age of bike.

The Throttle

There is a lot of confusion about the rules relating to the throttle or as the bikes that are fitted with these are sometimes called ‘twist and go.’

Twist and go is now, or should be an outdated concept in the UK. At the start of 2016 the rules were changed so that the throttle can only be used without pedalling upto 4 mph. However, so long as the pedals are moving round you can use the throttle to take you right up to the maximum speed of 15.5 mph.

A lot of people think that the throttle has been out-lawed – but it has not. As expressed above you can still use a throttle and in fact this ‘get around’ means that you can effectively do almost nothing with the pedals while the throttle does all of the work.

What about older bikes? If the bike predates the change in legislation then the throttle, with no pedalling required is still legal.
I use the throttle as well as the pedals, I'm stopped a T Juntion all clear full throttle as soon as I move I start peddalling so well within the law, when 15.5mph it reached I stop using the throttle, slight decrese in speed due to hill back on the throttle again

Copied from one of the many sources available on the internet and I strongly believe this one to be correct
Are throttle eBikes legal in UK?
From January 1 2016, the only throttles legal within the UK’s EAPC legislation are those that assist the rider without pedalling up to a maximum speed of 6 km/h (3.7 mph) – i.e. starting assistance only (and sometimes referred to as walk assist or walk mode)

If the cyclist pedals at the same time then the throttle can still assist up to the general limit of 15.5mph. (25km/h)
And the motor can run without plugging in the throttle.

Thanks for all the helpful replies.

I had not considered that and now feel inclined to wire in the throttle anyway.
