I suspect it's just not five star...

Having seen various people's reports the hotels are fine, they're not luxurious, but they are perfectly adequate space.
Also spinning a story about his being subjected to terrible conditions and ill-treatment encourages turning it into a discrimination/racial issue as happened when Serbia (population and politicians) started kicking-up about it - they were turning it into a "punishing Serbia" rather than an issue about failing to meet vaccination requirements for visa entry.

Having seen TV reports of the supporting crowds gathering outside his hotel in his support, they were pretty small crowds and if he does make it to the competition I do wonder about booing happening. (My brother is Australian National and apparently there is widespread anger about the prospect him being allowed in, the "one rule for them, restrictive rule for the rest of us".

He is not being forced to stay there. He chose to stay there and is free to leave the country whenever he wants to but he has opted to stay there.

While the controversy over Djokovich's entry rages on, the real controversy is actually taking place just under the radar. The Guardian sub-editors are slogging it out with the journalists over which is the correct adjectival use of "Australia" (the Guardian in a reflection of the need for balance allows both):

The headline:
Novak Djokovic Tennis star wins in court, but Australia government can still deport him
Australia’s immigration minister has what some call ‘god-like powers’ to cancel visas on a broad range of grounds

From the article:
The harsh border policies that have allowed Australian governments to detain asylum seekers indefinitely are now being directed at one unvaccinated man, who happens to be the world’s No 1 ranked male tennis player.
Maybe that nice Australian (or should that be "Australia"?) judge can rule on it.

I am not pleading for Djokovic's hardships. I am commenting on the conditions for refugee detainees that his case has publicised, though perhaps not in all the media reports.

It's the rich what gets the pleasure
Isn't it a blooming shame?

Is this a stray from the "What does your head in?" thread? Or the "Booster Yes/no?" thread? No mention of helmets (till now) or brexit (ditto)

Thanks for that Jonathan. In fact the headline now reads "Australian government". I don't think the Guardian reads my posts (who knows? ) on here so I suspect it is different sub-editors making their own choices. So much for the famous style manual.

You're right, it should have gone in the other thread but a little light relief before this thread really takes off might not go awry.

This is fascinating... that URL above still shows Australia's to me.

What do others see, please?

It's not as if Djokovic travels with a single bag and a couple of balls in his pocket!

Such a venture requires planning - all the staff and other logistics.
No one would attempt to enter unless all things were agreed and examined.

So he was given the "green light" to enter, and then refused entry, although nothing had changed. AFAIK.

He should have been properly informed before he flew out.
The problem is that of the Australian Govt.
No one else's.
Incompetent and inconsequent.

Thanks.

That's a different piece from the one with the URL cited upthread. Looks like an inconsistency in style rather than a caching issue or different versions for different browsers.

When the Djokovic scoop was the main story on the BBC News www this was also prominent
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/world-us-canada-59919101

To save people following the link BBC hack Laura Trevelyan was reporting to camera on the first anniversary of the storming of the US Capitol. Presumably to give some authenticity to her report she was standing outside that building. No real reason to be there, rather than in a studio - nothing happening to report. It was windy and snowing. Hold the front page!
