FWIW. I completely agree.

Anyone looking for us to post up evidence (HE will be....dum de dum) is just plain incapable of observation ....

One useful way of identifying if a thing has got worse is to ask the proposer if lots of other things have also got worse. That can sometimes identify declinism and goldenagery.

My almost crash the other day involving the fiat 500 on the how many crashes this year thread was just due to a stupid person I'd say there was no malice intended but stupid people can cause a lot of harm. Best keep them indoors but they break out now and again.

What's the evidence that we have become more selfish? I see much less intolerance and plenty of people volunteering to help others.

Thanks

Jonathan
People volunteering doesn't make them automatically unselfish. Someone taking time out of their days plans to help someone is being unselfish.
Someone planning to help others every Sunday between 9:00 & 10:00 at the local village hall can be in some cases ascribed to the feel good factor.
I think there is a trend towards people being less inclined to spontaneous acts of benevolence than planned benevolence simply because of the life style we are encouraged to lead these days.

But no , I don't have any peer reviewed evidence for it.(appart from maybe Dawkin's " Tit for tat" argument in the 'Selfish Gene')

a fat lip. I saw a driver only last year, when a cyclist (clearly in the wrong) get out his car at a stop light and fetch a crow bar from the boot. Cyclist made off down a cycle lane towards the river, to the applause of other drivers.

It does no favours to the image of cycling to wantonly antagonise drivers. I don't know what your problem is, but unless we can make the driving community and the pedestrian public our friends, we're going nowhere.

Well said.

It makes about as much sense as the other way round.

So they applauded assault? Certainly sounds like hating cyclists!

Glad it's not that bad around here.

There was no assault, but what they applauded was someone taking direct action against an abusive cyclist.

It works both ways, and to pretend cyclists are angels, advances the argument not one bit. If you go around deliberately antagonising motorists and pedestrians, you'll have to take what's coming.

So your advice is just bend over!
It's always a cyclists fault.

I've had two Incidents on my last ride.
Car overtook me and turned left on an entrance to a roundabout, cutting me up. to save a few seconds. There was only one lane here and I was occupying it intending to turn right not got into position where I could indicate just yet, I was almost but not quite in the primary position. 20 yards from the roundabout.

Second incident I looked over my back put my hand out to indicate right to go into a right hand lane to turn right at traffic lights.
The car promptly overtook me on the wrong side of the road before I got to the traffic lights.
If they waited for a few seconds they realise that I was out of the left-hand lane which go straight on and they could simply just go straight on.
When they overtook me I was already in the right-hand lane anyway.
Somewhere along the lines of Cycling on the road some 55 years now, I've got it all wrong?

Hehe. Golden-agery just isn't what it was.

I think there might be a typo in the bold bit, so perhaps you can confirm what you've written:

A driver got out of his car, and threatened a cyclist with a crow-bar. Is that right?

Did the cyclist cause or threaten any damage (to property or person)?

And you support those who applauded the guy with the crow-bar; is that right?

The thread began as a genuine inquiry about an unpleasant incident in a location which might have been an examination question about rights of way etc. Most of the early stuff seemed to be aimed at answering the OP, but it's now just yet another bad driving thread.

IMO, it would be interesting to see the layout here when the cones have gone and it's supposed to be finished

That's a ridiculous response. Nowhere have I applauded action of that nature. Other drivers did, which I can understand, because the cyclist was being extremely offensive in language and action.

What I'm trying to highlight is the poor relations that are only aggravated by unwarrated comments (as I understand it from a cyclist to a motorist thru they car window. This only antagonises drivers, which in my experience, being at the whim of someone in a 2 ton, motorised weapon is not a very smart thing to do.

It is beholden on us, as cyclists (and representatives of cycling) not to unduly antagonise motorists and pedestrians without good cause.

The post in referring to (if you'll take the time to re read above) is from Hemo where a cyclist is needlessly and wantonly antagonising a motorist, simply because they can. See below.

The fallout from that is an ever decreasing spiral of hatred towards the cycling fraternity. We are better than this. In other words, we reap what we sow.
