I wanna fly with my bike.

Post by ATB.pete »

I'm thinking of flying to somewhere in France next year and then touring to another airport to fly home.
On this years tour my bike fully loaded weighed 80lb's.
What are the airline companies gonna make of that?

Depends on airline and class of travel. Some work on weight while others count the number of 'pieces'. The piece system obviously favours a heavily laden bike which only counts as 1 piece. BA allows 51lbs on European flights in cattle class.

Take what you can as hand luggage (e.g. panniers) as this counts under a separate allowance. Make sure you don't have a multi-tool or anything else that will upset them at security screening - leave these with the bike.

Airlines will post the policy on their website - some enforce it rigidly (e.g. RyanAir) while others turn a blind eye to a bit over.

If you get REALLY desperate wear whatever you can as the weight of you and your clothing is completely ignored. I could never understand why a skinny person with a bit of excess baggage is penalised while a lard a***e gets to take their 'excess' for free.

Ultimately if you are over you may be asked to pay for the excess weight - again the cost varies by airline and a few lbs may not break the bank.

Finally, if your bike really will weigh 80lbs you are taking too much stuff!!!
