Where to get replacement mudguard adjustment barrel / safety release?

Post by jimster99 »

Hi all,

I wonder if a wiser mind could suggest how I replace the mudguard adjustment barrel / safety release latch on my bike. It's a plastic barrel with a screw inside that adjusts how close the mudguard gets to the wheel. I kicked it off while cycling yesterday and it rolled under a moving car and got squashed into 1,000 pieces. I have currently put tape over the missing bit to hold it together. Photos below! Thanks :)

Oh and currently the mudguard is rubbing on the wheel and I'm struggling to get it to not do this. Is there any clever technique to line it up? Or is it just keep moving things around until it doesn't rub?

This is a photo of the missing barrel, it's currently taped over to hold the mudguard arm in place:

This is what the other side looks like (with the barrel still present)

And this is a picture of the entire mudguard assembly:

It's a good opportunity to check that everything else is true. Then adjust the mudguard to the clearance that you want.

I don't recognise that type.

SJS have a big range of fixings:

Wow, what a selection! I can't see what half of them are for. I must do bit of research as I have to find a way of getting larger tyres to fit in my tourer frame.

Your mudguards look like Blackburn 'Cloudburst' - they are very fragile/brittle. I think that is intended as a safety feature.

Mostly no longer available and not cheap.

The fittings look similar to those on these Halfords mudguards https://www.halfords.com/cycling/bike-p ... 9YEALw_wcB

However Halfords don't list any spares on their website, but it might be worth a trip into the local store to see if they have any.

Mr Benton you are a star! That bontrager part looks it would indeed do the job! I'll also try nipping into Halfords tomorrow and seeing if they'll sell me just the spare piece. Thanks so much. :)
