Broken cable jammed 10-speed STI leavers

Post by Bice »

Getting this out of a 10-speed STI Shimano 105 right hand shifter was a bit tricky: the lever was jammed with only 3 clicks.

I had to use tweezers to pull what remained of the cable stub back into its home slot, and then introduce the new cable wrong end first back along the outer cable in order to push this little piece out.

I broke the cable 10 miles out on a 60 mile club ride yesterday.

Tightening in the limit screw right in meant I got to 6th gear and I could carry on. Luckily, the bike is a triple, so I actually had 3 usable gears not just 2. But I did walk up a short sharp hill towards the end.

A bit hard core and I certainly felt it today, but it was a good work out.

It was still enjoyable, to my surprise.

This is a fairly common cable failure in Shimano STI shifters (& perhaps others?). After 2-3 failures like this, including in seriously remote places, I took to prophylactically changing gear cables every 12 months.

I took to selling the STi shifters and fitting bar ends...Such lovely SIMPLE things.

Prophylaxis is very sensible in many walks of life, but this would be excessive for me. The cable has broken after 12 years of use, so I don't think I will be writing to Trek / Shimano to complain. (The rear outer cable at the rear mech was full of old crud as well and the inner cable did not pass through smoothly. So I replaced that as well.)

If I were to complain to Shimano, I would point out that the 105 STI shifter - almost certainly superseded by now - is badly designed as the leverage on the brake - I think the pivot is too low - is very feeble. My Campagnolo Centaur ergoshifters are much better in this, and the brakes are far more effective. But the mechanism of the shifter is brilliantly reliable.

Well, I have never used bar ends and have never liked the idea or look of them.

I do, however, use down-tube shifters on 3 bikes, which are all 7 speeds. I doubt I would want un-indexed down-tube shifters on a 10-speed, although I will consider them if / when my Campag Ergpower shifters give up on the Italian steel frame I have (Lazzaretti).

I like the simplicity, but bar-end shifters - and, worse, thumbies on the handlebars - lose a key advantage of down-tube shifters in being out of the way.

If you have 5700 shifters, while you are at it (and even if it’s done already) have a look see if the rotating shifter barrel has been shaving bits of rubber off the inside face of the lever hood. I’ve seen these bits get into the workings - which is, obviously, not healthy.
The older I get the more I’m inclined to act my shoe size, not my age.

Post STI (abandoned) I now use unindexed Gevenalle Audax shifters on my (currently) 10 speed gravel bike. Work a treat. Simple shifting & in a convenient location.

I had the same (apparently) a few months ago. Found I could not change to highest 3 gears on the rear but rest were fine. Once home say the cable had frayed coming out of the sleeve at the rear and being lazy (and having no spare cable to hand) took it into LBS to sort. They called and said it was not the fraying at the rear stopping changing but fraying inside the STI - though cable needed changing anyway. Apparently sometimes the frayinging inside the STI can damage the STI but I was lucky it was all OK.
