Rear Brake Hanger

Post by geomannie »

I have acquired a bike with cantilever brakes where the rear brake hanger dangles off the seat post bolt. The hanger that came with the bike lacks an adjuster and the design is too short to allow me to put one in. Not handy if you want to adjust the brakes, particularly if out and about.

I have found that Surly supply such a thing, but its everywhere out of stock. I posted a "want" but I doubt I will get a response. viewtopic.php?t=149563

Does anyone have any suggestions for an alternative?

Thanks

Jagwire do an adjuster which takes the slack out of the straddle wire rather than the brake cable, which is a better place to adjust for wear.

I might have a spare knocking about, let me know if interested.

Is that hanger on the right way round? The cable loop looks tighter than I'd like. If it wasn't for that, you could add an inline adjuster just above the hanger.

Thanks, I've already seen this page. Nitto https://www.sjscycles.co.uk/brakes/nitt ... 1-30-mm-s/ might work but the price(!) and its possibly a bit short. Longer would give a smoother cable run.

Can it be flipped the other way up and an adjuster fitted in?

Have you tried this.

Or using an inline adjuster. such as this?

Those brake hangers are usually fitted the other way around. This gives better access to the cable.

It may be possible to modify the hanger so you could use a screw cable fitting. Possibly drill and tap the hole or just use a cable adjuster with a nut, sometimes called barrell adjusters.

I have tried, but the angle makes it difficult to fit an adjuster.

I have, but only on a front brake with an uphanger which has a good length of outer. I'm not sure how tight a bend you could fit one to, could always try it and see.
I have another bike with no adjusters, though it's a fair weather machine so pad wear is minimal. it also has plenty of lever travel so never needs adjusting mid ride and at home it's no big deal to adjust the straddle wire.
EDIT - Of course the adjuster doesn't have to be by the hanger, it could also be between lever and first stop.

I’ve also been after one, so thanks for this. The Nitto adjustable one looks good but it’s twice the price of the out of stock Surly. Oh well.

If you are able to wait, according to the importer the ETA for the Surly hangers is May.

Depending on the type of cable termination on your cantis, one of these could be worth a look:

That looks a possiility but how exactly does it work? I can't immediately fathom where it would go. I imagine at one end of the straddle wire. On this bike one end of the wire is the typical allan bolt clamp, the other the barrel-end as in the picture.Do you know if it works on this arrangement? Or, am I missing something?

Some early cantilevers have an adjustable element in the straddle wire .
Suggest you get a barrel end cable, with a pinch boltbthe other end ( as in how you would anchor the cable on a Sidepull brake) in the short term which will Allow adjustment 'on the road' with a spanner and pliers until you resolve the cable hanger replacement.

Or how about the ones in the SJS site about 3 rows down that come up from the brake 'hole' ( assuming the frame has one ? ) provided that doesn't interfere with the mechanical advantage of the straddle arrangement.

Do you not have some cable adjustment at the lever?

I made my rear brake hanger myself. I used a piece of 3 mm thick alloy strip, drilled a hole big enough for the seat collar pinch bolt at one end and bolted a barrel adjuster and mount from an old caliper brake at the other. It worked as well as the shop bought and cost me half an hour of my time
