Dawes Sardar

Post by RichHust »

Hi all,
Can anybody advise me on the best tyres for my Dawes Sardar year 2007 for road work. I purchased a Michelin country rock 26x1.75 and it was too wide for the fork even though this was the original size the bike came with! My version of the Sardar was produced with drop handlebars and was sold as a poor mans expedition bike. I am using it as a road only keep fit bike and would like to keep the 26x1.75 tyre size. Any recommendations would be gratefully received,
Many thanks.

The new and original tyres are clearly not both 26x1.75! Some manufacturers are better than others at size-labelling their tyres. Is the Michelin tyre made in 26x1.5?

I believe the Sardar originally had Schwalbe Marathon tyres at 26 x 1.5.

I have a Sardar - I think it's the 2004 model so possibly not quite the same. It came with Marathon tyres, size I think (as Halla says) 26x1.5. I used it for touring on the original tyres and then on another set of Marathons, then Panaracer RibMo folding tyres in the same size. The RibMos are very good and I'd recommend them, though a quick Google suggests the folding version may be in short supply in that size (discontinued?); the wire-bead ones seem to be relatively easy to find.
Nowadays it's my hack bike mostly used for rides into town along a canal towpath. I still use the RibMos in summer, but switch to Schwalbe Land Cruiser 26x1.75 in winter as the towpath gets muddy and slippery. These fit my forks with around 3mm clearance each side (I've just measured it.)
The Sardar is a nice strong bike, but heavy (which is why mine's been relegated to hack status). It will certainly keep you fit!

I use 1.75s on my Sardar but I do know that 1.9 Snow Studs don't fit so it's obviously a close-run thing. And yes, the original tyres wre 1.5. It's an oddity I think of the Sardar that tyre clerance wasn't brilliant (unlike the Thorn Sherpa).

Hi all.
Just a little information on my Dawes Sardar.I bought it new in 2007 and i think it had been in stock for a long time, the colour is a dark red/brown.The bike came with 26x1.75 scwalbe tyres(im afraid i cant remember the model now)with a town/country type tread.Im begining to wonder if the bike shop had changed the original tyres before putting it up for sale !! I want to keep the mudguards on for practical reasons,so clearance might be a problem with some 1.75 tyres. It is a heavy bike so any help with a lively tyre would be appreciated. Many thanks for all your replies. All the best.
