All the more reason to support the Nationwide along with the still existent small locally based mutuals like the, to my mind, charmingly named Stafford Railway Building Society. https://srbs.co.uk/thirdcrank wrote: 15 Feb 2022, 9:57am
The moneymen screwing the building society movement is another of my many hobbyhorses. Clip, clop......

Perhaps it's significant who was chosen as the face of "The Leeds." This ... er ... stereotype of the shady Londoner

Re support for building societies, I reverse carpet-bagged the Bradford and Bingley by opening savings accounts in the names of myself and Mrs thirdcrank to be able to vote against demutualisation. At one time I had £££ stashed in several building societies and consistently voted against demutualisation. One problem IMO with the remaining mutuals is that the interests of the directors are not aligned with the interests of the members. As I've posted before "How can it be that a mutual organisation, in theory owned by its members, can face compensation claims for mis-selling to its members?

Re: Anybody here from Leeds?
Nothing to do with Leeds or "The Leeds" but this is perhaps a sign of how far the once mighty Halifax (reported to have been the biggest mutual in the world IIRC) has sunk.

Come to think of it there is a sad connection with Leeds in that Mike Blackburn head honcho at the Leeds Perm masterminded its amalgamation with the Halifax Building Society and the demutualisation of the new outfit.
