The last time I had one on a bike was almost 40 years ago. Then I recently bought a folder and discovered how damned handy the things are, especially when folding. I'm tempted to put one on my camping bike as loaded bicycles develop a mind of their own.
Can anyone recommend a stand that a) works on big wheeler's and b) doesn't look like I.K.Brunel designed it?

Glueman,
A year or two back I bought one from Cyclesense in Tadcaster which fits to the seat stay/chain stay of my Galaxy and works a treat. It even holds the bike up when loaded with panniers.
I can't remember the name of it but I seem to recall that it was made in Japan ( I think ) and is black plastic/nylon or whatever.
I remember the chap in the shop saying they were going like hot cakes and I had to order mine and he sent it on when it came in.

Thanks for that tandem man. I had a bike from Cycle Sense a few years ago so I'll check them out. The Germans seem to go for them on treking bikes and you can see why. I like clean lines as much as the next cyclist but when a bike's carrying the kitchen sink a prop stand isn't going to matter weightwise.

I've just added one of the Pletcher ones to my Tourer. I've been putting it off because I think they look ugly as sin most of the time but I've been volunteering with the local Sustrans group and it is far easier to have a stand when you need to stop frequently to do a bit of work. Anyway I'm rather pleased with it as it is hidden away under the pannier most of the time and then ready to use when it's needed.
If you are putting one on, though, cut up some old innertube to protect your frame as there are no bits of rubber included.
