Re: War on Our Doorstep: How do we respond?
Hope the 3 prisoners who got the death sentence are swopped quickly for Russian ones in fair exchange. The Russians are clearly in breach of the Geneva convention but what else to do
Re: War on Our Doorstep: How do we respond?
Apparently mercenaries are not covered by the Geneva convention. Whether or not they are all mercenaries is a moot point.briansnail wrote: ↑12 Jun 2022, 3:18pm Hope the 3 prisoners who got the death sentence are swopped quickly for Russian ones in fair exchange. Re: War on Our Doorstep: How do we respond?
I used to think this was straightforward - but I've just done a quick google, and it turns out you're right - VERY moot!
*Incidentally, google tells me that injured mercenaries ARE protected by Geneva. Another thing that might play out differently in practice to theory ...

Why is it moot?pete75 wrote: ↑12 Jun 2022, 3:22pmApparently mercenaries are not covered by the Geneva convention. "While mercenaries are not entitled to POW status, the fact that Aslin and Pinner are officially members of the Ukrainian armed forces means that they are not mercenaries. Indeed, Aslin reportedly holds Ukrainian nationality."

Re: War on Our Doorstep: How do we respond?
One aspect to Russia'a behaviour that I find amazing is e.g.
When I was very young my Dad used to regularly show me an ornament he has which was engraved "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you" and it's stuck with me. Russia behaves like it has and expects nobody to respond with a trivial fraction of the same back again.
Words fail me.

Calling Russia's invasion and destruction in Ukraine "openly hostile" would be something of an understatement. Even if Lithuania's move is "openly hostile" (which I'd certainly question) does Russia this it is the only country in the world allowed to behave in an "openly hostile manner". Does Russia really expect to do what it's doing in Ukraine and have every other country ignore and do nothing?https://www.theguardian.com/world/2022/jun/20/russia-condemns-lithuania-transit-ban-some-goods-kaliningrad wrote:Russia condemns Lithuania transit ban on some goods to Kaliningrad
...
Russia’s foreign ministry said Vilnius must reverse the “openly hostile” move.

I must say the EU is very good with the Ukranian coloured suit. Are they on general issue over there?

And in addition to the support for Ukraine there are the sanctions against Russia:Jdsk wrote: ↑20 Jun 2022, 3:56pm The EU and Ukraine:

Re: War on Our Doorstep: How do we respond?
A bit off-topic but on TV a few days ago (when the refugees to Rwanda was still news), TV news was interviewing a charity worker based on the French coast and they asked "what should UK do to stop the rubber dinghies?" and her reply "easy, treat the refugees the same way as those refugees from Ukraine".thirdcrank wrote: ↑21 Jun 2022, 11:13amAny word on whether Ukraine has applied to join the UKraine as well as the EU?

Yes, that's a great way for revealing and exploring our own views, sentiments and prejudices.Psamathe wrote: ↑21 Jun 2022, 11:23amA bit off-topic but on TV a few days ago (when the refugees to Rwanda was still news), TV news was interviewing a charity worker based on the French coast and they asked "what should UK do to stop the rubber dinghies?" and her reply "easy, treat the refugees the same way as those refugees from Ukraine".

Re: War on Our Doorstep: How do we respond?
Any guesses as to the very generous benefactor who paid £103 million dollars for the Nobel medal on auction?. Gates, Warren Buffet maybe
Equally impressive was the anonymous way whoever donated. Of course Ukrainian children will benefit. Good people about,

Re: War on Our Doorstep: How do we respond?
Difficult to guess. I think those like Gates (and many others) would just give if they wanted to support a cause and would not do so through bidding on an item (i.e. they'd give without wanting to take the medal). I suspect a fair number of prominent billionaires could be eliminated as possibilities as they'd have made sure their PR teams were briefing everybody, articles written about what they'd done, Social Media bots set-off publicising their generosity ...briansnail wrote: ↑21 Jun 2022, 1:18pm Any guesses as to the very generous benefactor who paid £103 million dollars for the Nobel medal on auction?.
