DNA test to show family origins

Post by pete75 »

Anybody else had one of those ancestry DNA tests done. I did and got the results below. I was expecting the English, Polish and German but not the Balkan, Baltic, Swedish or Scottish.

Be so great to get the current cabinet to run the test, then mull over the notion of welcoming strangers...

Yes my wife did one. Due to her dark skin colour and looks we were expecting some kind of exotic result to 'give us a clue'. English / Norwegian was the major result so no clearer to unravelling the mystery not even a hint. The family tree actually provided more clues but it wasn't represented in any way in the DNA result.

They're basically a scam.

Or at the very least rough guesstimate presented as hard facts.

Yes. A friend with variety of ancestral backgrounds - he's a Kiwi with Pacific Islander background but with European blood mixed in did two different DNA origin tests. They didn't concur.

I was lucky that it accorded with what I understood about my heritage I suppose.

I don't know. Every six months or so they send a more refined set of results through - same large areas but more refined as to region. My father was a Silesian of Polish/German parentage so I'd say the DNA match got that bit right. My mother's parents were both from Eastern England so that bit is right too. Her father's family were from an east coast port so that probably explains the Baltic and Swedish DNA as over the years Yarmouth had a big trade with Scandinavia and the Baltic. . Probably explains the Scottish too as, for many years, Scottish girls went there to work in the Herring trade.

Early (? the first) humans in Scandinavia were dark-skinned. I don't suppose that they tell you which markers they use... ?

That's interesting thanks and I'll pass it on to the better half . I'm not sure of the finer points regarding markers etc.

Yes i read somewhere that DNA tests are pretty useless [or rather vague at best] for race origin, but what they are good for is confirming who your close family members are, ...or aren't.

Sunak, Javid, Patel, Kwarteng, Sharma, Zahawi, Raab? And Boris makes no secret of his ancestry. I don't think they make a secret of the facts regarding their ancestry. Rees Mogg is presumably part Welsh! I wonder how he feels about that! I wonder how my Welsh friends feel about that!

I've toyed with the idea of having such a test, just for amusement. I'd probably be disappointed if there were nothing a bit unexpected in the mix. There are family rumours on my Mum's side of gypsy ancestry, which would be interesting if true. My Dad came from a region of Ireland known to have had Viking activity, which might bump up my Scandinavian DNA. A good dollop of Scandi DNA is common in the UK.

I believe that anyone with a family history strongly linked to the eastern side of England will have Scandinavian ancestors.

Can't see why of any interest. As my memory pretty much confirms what i was told I assume I know where my parents and grandparents originated and that's enough for me.
Apart from two children and two nieces I have no other relatives known to me. Fine!
But then I don't know when my father died nor where he is buried, suits me.
